Etiquette of Repentance & Seeking Forgiveness (Tawbah) in the Quran & Sunnah

Repentance in Islam (tawbah and istighfar): the open door of Allah’s mercy, the master supplication of forgiveness, and the daily practice of the Prophet ﷺ, from the Quran and authentic Sunnah.

Part 1: Repentance in the Light of the Quran

1. Never despair of Allah’s mercy.

Allah says:

Say (on My behalf), “O servants of Mine who have acted recklessly against their own selves, do not despair of Allah’s mercy. Surely, Allah will forgive all sins. Surely, He is the One who is the Most-Forgiving, the Very-Merciful. (Surah Az-Zumar 39:53)

The most hopeful verse in the Quran is addressed to those who have wronged themselves: Allah forgives all sins — so no sinner may call his case hopeless.

2. Turn with a sincere repentance.

Allah says:

O you who believe, turn to Allah with a faithful repentance. It is hoped from your Lord that he will write off your faults, and will admit you to the gardens beneath which rivers flow, on the Day when Allah will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him. Their light will run before them and to their right hands. They will say, “Our Lord, perfect for us our light, and forgive us. Indeed you are powerful over every thing.” (Surah At-Tahrim 66:8)

The command is not to a formal apology but to a tawbah that is nasuh — sincere, leaving the sin, resolving never to return; its fruit is Paradise and rivers beneath it.

3. Seek forgiveness, then turn back.

Allah says:

Seek forgiveness from your Lord, then turn towards Him in repentance. Surely, my Lord is very merciful, most loving.” (Surah Hud 11:90)

Hud was commanded to call his people to istighfar joined with tawbah — and the promise attached is rain, strength and a term of life lived in goodness.

Part 2: Seeking Forgiveness in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ

1. Allah stretches out His Hand — night and day.

Abu Musa reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Allah stretches out His Hand during the night so that the one who sinned by day may repent, and stretches out His Hand during the day so that the one who sinned by night may repent — until the sun rises from the west.”

Lesson: There is no hour in which the door is shut; the invitation is renewed with every night and every day.

2. “As long as you call upon Me and hope in Me, I forgave you.”

Allah, Blessed and Most High, said: “O son of Adam! As long as you called upon Me and hoped in Me, I forgave you, despite whatever occurred from you, and I did not mind. O son of Adam! Were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and then you sought My forgiveness, I would forgive you.”

Lesson: The two keys of forgiveness are calling upon Him and hoping in Him — despair is the only locked door.

3. More than seventy times a day.

“By Allah! I ask Allah’s forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day.” — and he ﷺ was the one whose past and future sins were already forgiven.

Lesson: If the forgiven one repented seventy times daily, istighfar is not a sinner’s emergency tool; it is the daily bread of the heart.

4. A hundred times a day — even with a clouded heart.

“There is at times a shade upon my heart, and I seek forgiveness from Allah a hundred times a day.”

Lesson: Even a passing heaviness on the heart is met with istighfar at once — the Sunnah is to clear it before it settles.

5. The master supplication of forgiveness.

“The most superior way of seeking forgiveness is to say: O Allah, You are my Lord; there is none worthy of worship except You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I am upon Your covenant and promise as much as I am able. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favours upon me, and I acknowledge my sin — so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.” Whoever says it in the day, certain of it, and dies that day enters Paradise; and whoever says it at night, certain of it, and dies enters Paradise.

Lesson: Sayyid al-Istighfar gathers lordship, servitude, gratitude and confession in a few lines — learn it and make it daily.

6. Repentance is accepted — until the death-rattle.

“Indeed Allah accepts the repentance of a slave as long as the soul does not reach the throat (ghargharah).”

Lesson: The door stands open for a lifetime — but it does close; the wise repent while the breath is still easy.

7. Glad tidings for the one whose record is full of istighfar.

“Glad tidings (tuba) to those who find much seeking of forgiveness in the record of their deeds.”

Lesson: The scroll is being written today; fill its pages with the words its Reader loves.
