Etiquette & Sunnahs of Slaughter & Sacrifice (Dhabh) in the Quran & Sunnah

آداب الذبح والأضحية في ضوء القرآن والسنة

Slaughter in Islam (dhabh and udhiyah): excellence to the animal, the sharpened blade, the name of Allah, and the Prophet’s ﷺ own sacrifice, from the Quran and authentic Sunnah.

Part 1: Sacrifice in the Light of the Quran

1. For every nation, a rite of sacrifice.

Allah says:

For every Ummah (religious community) We prescribed the act of sacrifice, so that they recite Allah’s name over the provision He gave them from the cattle. So, your God is One God. Therefore, to Him alone you must submit. And give good news to those who turn to Him with humbleness - (Surah Al-Hajj 22:34)

Sacrifice is as old as the nations of faith; its purpose is declared in the same verse — that Allah’s name be mentioned over what He has provided of cattle.

2. Neither flesh nor blood reaches Allah — only taqwa.

Allah says:

It is neither their flesh nor their blood that reaches Allah, but what does reach Him is the taqwā (the sense of obedience) on your part. Thus He has made them (the animals) subjugated to you, so that you proclaim Allah’s glory for the guidance He gave you. And give good news to those who are good in their deeds. (Surah Al-Hajj 22:37)

The meat feeds people; what ascends is the piety in the slaughterer’s heart. Slaughter done carelessly or proudly misses the very thing it was for.

3. Do not eat of that over which Allah’s name was not mentioned.

Allah says:

Do not eat that (meat) over which the name of Allah has not been pronounced. This is surely a sin. The satans inspire their friends to dispute with you. If you were to obey them, you would be Mushriks. (Surah Al-An'am 6:121)

The name of Allah at the moment of slaughter is not a formality — the verse calls eating without it an act of disobedience.

Part 2: Slaughter in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ

1. Excellence (ihsan) is written over slaughter itself.

“Verily Allah has enjoined goodness to everything; so when you kill, kill in a good way, and when you slaughter, slaughter in a good way. So every one of you should sharpen his knife and let the animal die comfortably.”

Lesson: The sharpest blade and the quickest, calmest death are acts of worship, not mere technique.

2. Whatever makes the blood flow — with Allah’s name mentioned.

Rafi‘ ibn Khadij said: “Messenger of Allah, we have no knife.” He ﷺ said: “If the tool causes blood to gush out and Allah’s name is mentioned, eat. But do not slaughter with a tooth or a nail — the tooth is a bone, and the nail is the knife of the Abyssinians.”

Lesson: The conditions are simple and clear: a cutting edge that flows the blood, and the name of Allah upon it.

3. He ﷺ slaughtered with his own hand, saying the name.

Jabir witnessed the sacrifice with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the prayer place: a ram was brought, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ slaughtered it with his own hand, saying: “Bismillah, wa Allahu akbar — this is from me and from whoever of my ummah does not sacrifice.”

Lesson: Slaughtering one’s own sacrifice, with one’s own hand and tongue upon the name, is the Sunnah example.

4. Sharpen the blade — away from the animal’s eyes.

‘Aishah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that a ram be brought for him to sacrifice. He said: “‘Aishah, give me the large knife,” then said: “Sharpen it on a stone.” She did so; he took it, laid the ram down and slaughtered it, saying: “In the name of Allah — O Allah, accept it from Muhammad, the family of Muhammad, and the ummah of Muhammad.”

Lesson: The knife is prepared before the animal is laid down; the animal is not made to watch its own death being prepared.

5. The age of the sacrificial animal.

“Sacrifice only a grown animal (musinnah), unless it is difficult for you — then sacrifice a jadha‘ of the sheep (over six months).”

Lesson: The sacrifice is an offering; it is chosen sound and grown, not the leftover of the flock.

6. Meat whose slaughter you doubt — mention the name yourself and eat.

People newly come out of polytheism brought meat, and the Companions did not know whether Allah’s name had been mentioned over it. He ﷺ said: “Mention the name of Allah over it yourselves, and eat.”

Lesson: Suspicion is not the Sunnah’s way with the food of Muslims; the name on your own lips settles what doubt cannot.
