Adiyy ibn Hatim: "Fearing None But Allah"

Adiyy ibn Hatim: "Fearing None But Allah"

Adiyy ibn Hatim was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ in his city when two men arrived, each carrying a complaint of hard times. The first complained of destitution and poverty. Then:

"Then another man came and complained of robbery (by highwaymen)."
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

Into this atmosphere of poverty and fear, the Prophet ﷺ turned to Adiyy:

"Adi! Have you been to Al-Hira?"
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

Adiyy answered:

"I haven't been to it, but I was informed about it."
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

Then the Prophet ﷺ told him of things yet to come. The first was a picture of safety that sounded impossible in a land of highway robbers:

"If you should live for a long time, you will certainly see that a lady in a Howdah traveling from Al-Hira will (safely reach Mecca and) perform the Tawaf of the Ka`ba, fearing none but Allah."
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

Adiyy's own heart argued with what he had heard. He said to himself:

"What will happen to the robbers of the tribe of Tai who have spread evil through out the country?"
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

The Prophet ﷺ continued with a second matter, a picture of conquest:

"If you should live long, the treasures of Khosrau will be opened (and taken as spoils)."
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

Adiyy asked, hardly believing the scale of it:

"You mean Khosrau, son of Hurmuz?"
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

The Prophet ﷺ confirmed:

"Khosrau, son of Hurmuz"
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

Then he told him of a third matter — wealth so great that giving would grow difficult:

"you will see that one will carry a handful of gold or silver and go out looking for a person to accept it from him, but will find none to accept it from him."
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

And then the Prophet ﷺ carried Adiyy's mind to the meeting with Allah:

"And any of you, when meeting Allah, will meet Him without needing an interpreter between him and Allah to interpret for him"
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

Allah will ask him:

"Didn't I send a messenger to teach you?"
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

He will answer yes. Then Allah will say:

"Didn't I give you wealth and do you favors?"
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

He will answer yes again. And then:

"Then he will look to his right and see nothing but Hell, and look to his left and see nothing but Hell."
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

Then Adiyy heard the Prophet ﷺ say:

> «اتَّقُوا النَّارَ وَلَوْ بِشِقَّةِ تَمْرَةٍ، فَمَنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ شِقَّةَ تَمْرَةٍ فَبِكَلِمَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ»

"Save yourself from the (Hell) Fire even with half a date (to be given in charity) and if you do not find a half date, then with a good pleasant word."
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

And what happened to the foretold matters? Adiyy lived to testify about them himself. He said:

"I saw a lady in a Howdah traveling from Al-Hira till she performed the Tawaf of the Ka`ba, fearing none but Allah."
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

"And I was one of those who opened (conquered) the treasures of Khosrau, son of Hurmuz."
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

As for the third matter, Adiyy told his listeners they would see it come true as well:

"you will see what the Prophet (ﷺ) Abu-l-Qasim had said"
Sahih al-Bukhari 3595

🌿 Stop and Think About This Scene

Notice where this conversation happens: between two complaints. One man has just spoken of poverty, another of robbers on the roads — and in that very moment the Prophet ﷺ describes a woman travelling alone across that same land, fearing none but Allah. Adiyy's objection rises from the real world he knew: what about the robbers of Tai, who had spread evil throughout the country? The prophecy was given to a man whose mind immediately raised the obstacle — and who then lived long enough to watch the obstacle disappear.

❤️ The Greatest Lesson

The greatest lesson is that the words of the Prophet ﷺ come true, and Adiyy is himself the witness: he heard the foretelling full of questions, and ended as one who had seen it with his own eyes. But the Prophet ﷺ did not leave him with wonders only; he turned his face to the meeting with Allah, where every person will stand without an interpreter, and gave him the practical shield for that day — charity, even if it is only half a date, and if not that, then a good pleasant word.

📚 Important Lessons From This Hadith

1. The truthfulness of the Prophet ﷺ is confirmed by events: Adiyy himself saw the lady travel from Al-Hira to the Ka'ba, "fearing none but Allah", and he was himself among those who opened the treasures of Khosrau.
2. Charity is never too small to matter: "Save yourself from the (Hell) Fire even with half a date (to be given in charity)".
3. When a person has nothing to give, a kind word still remains his: "and if you do not find a half date, then with a good pleasant word."
4. Every one of us will meet Allah directly, "without needing an interpreter between him and Allah to interpret for him", and will be asked about the messenger who was sent and the wealth and favours given to him.
5. On that Day, the view right and left will be sobering: "he will look to his right and see nothing but Hell, and look to his left and see nothing but Hell."

🏠 How Can We Apply This Hadith in Our Daily Lives?

We can stop waiting to be rich before we give. Half a date was the Prophet's ﷺ example, so a small help given today is worth acting on now. And on the days when we truly have nothing, we still have his second door: a good pleasant word — to a parent, a neighbour, or a stranger. And when we see the words of Allah's Messenger proven in our own lives, we should say so, as Adiyy did, and let our testimony strengthen others. Above all, we can prepare quietly for the meeting in which no interpreter will stand between us and Allah.

🌹 The Most Beautiful Message

The most beautiful message is that the man who had wondered what would happen to the robbers of Tai lived to watch a lone woman cross that same country fearing none but Allah. Questions raised honestly are not the end of faith; for Adiyy they were the beginning of a lifetime of witnessing. And wrapped inside the prophecy is a door left open for the poorest of us: if you have nothing in your hand, you still have a kind word on your tongue.
