Abu Sa'id ibn al-Mu'alla رضي الله عنه — "I will teach you a Sura which is the greatest Sura in the Qur'an"

Abu Sa'id ibn al-Mu'alla رضي الله عنه — "I will teach you a Sura which is the greatest Sura in the Qur'an"

Abu Sa'id ibn al-Mu'alla رضي الله عنه was standing in prayer inside the mosque when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him.

He did not respond — he was praying.

When he finished and came to the Prophet ﷺ, he said: "O Allah's Messenger! I was praying."

Sahih al-Bukhari 4474

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Didn't Allah say'--'Give your response to Allah (by obeying Him) and to His Apostle when he calls you.' (8.24)"

> «اسْتَجِيبُوا لِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ إِذَا دَعَاكُمْ»

Sahih al-Bukhari 4474

Then the Prophet ﷺ said to him:

> «لأُعَلِّمَنَّكَ سُورَةً هِيَ أَعْظَمُ السُّوَرِ فِي الْقُرْآنِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَخْرُجَ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ»

"I will teach you a Sura which is the greatest Sura in the Qur'an, before you leave the Mosque."

Sahih al-Bukhari 4474

Then he got hold of Abu Sa'id's hand.

Imagine it: the Prophet ﷺ holding your hand, and telling you that before you walk out of this mosque, you will learn the greatest surah in the entire Qur'an.

Then the Prophet ﷺ intended to leave the mosque — and he had not taught it yet.

Abu Sa'id held on to the promise. He said to him: "Didn't you say to me, 'I will teach you a Sura which is the greatest Sura in the Qur'an?'"

Sahih al-Bukhari 4474

He said:

> «الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ هِيَ السَّبْعُ الْمَثَانِي وَالْقُرْآنُ الْعَظِيمُ الَّذِي أُوتِيتُهُ»

"Al-Hamdu-Li l-lah Rabbi-l-`alamin (i.e. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds) which is Al-Sab'a Al-Mathani (i.e. seven repeatedly recited Verses) and the Grand Qur'an which has been given to me."

Sahih al-Bukhari 4474

The greatest surah in the Qur'an was the one Abu Sa'id — and every one of us — already recites in every rak'ah of every prayer: Surah al-Fatihah, opening with "Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds."

Sahih al-Bukhari 4474

🌿 Stop and Think About This Scene

Abu Sa'id was called by the Prophet ﷺ himself in the middle of his prayer — and he stayed in his prayer. When he explained, the Prophet ﷺ did not punish him; he taught him the verse about responding to Allah and His Messenger, and then turned the moment into a gift.

And when the lesson seemed about to slip away — the Prophet ﷺ rising to leave — it was the student's eagerness that held on to it: Didn't you say you would teach me?

Love of knowledge, in this story, wears the face of a man who would not let a promised lesson leave the mosque untaught.

❤️ The Greatest Lesson

The greatest surah in the Qur'an is not hidden in a place nobody reaches. It is the surah on the tongue of every praying Muslim, every day — "Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds." The Prophet ﷺ taught Abu Sa'id its rank so that what we recite most would never become what we value least.

📚 Important Lessons From This Hadith

1. Responding to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ is a command of the Qur'an itself: "Give your response to Allah (by obeying Him) and to His Apostle when he calls you." (8.24)
2. The Prophet ﷺ made a promise and tied it to a moment: "I will teach you a Sura which is the greatest Sura in the Qur'an, before you leave the Mosque."
3. A student may respectfully remind a teacher of a promised lesson — Abu Sa'id did: "Didn't you say to me, 'I will teach you a Sura which is the greatest Sura in the Qur'an?'"
4. The greatest surah is Al-Fatihah: "Al-Hamdu-Li l-lah Rabbi-l-`alamin (i.e. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds) which is Al-Sab'a Al-Mathani (i.e. seven repeatedly recited Verses) and the Grand Qur'an which has been given to me."
5. The Prophet ﷺ held his student's hand while teaching him — knowledge was passed with warmth, not distance.

🏠 How Can We Apply This Hadith in Our Daily Lives?

We recite Surah al-Fatihah in every rak'ah — at least seventeen times a day in the obligatory prayers alone. Abu Sa'id's story gives us a way to recite it differently: slowly, remembering that the Prophet ﷺ named this very surah the greatest in the Qur'an, the Seven Repeatedly Recited Verses and the Grand Qur'an itself. What we repeat most deserves our presence most.

🌹 The Most Beautiful Message

A man was called while he prayed, and feared he had failed his Prophet ﷺ. Instead, he left the mosque that day carrying the knowledge of which surah is the greatest in the Book of Allah — taught to him personally, hand in hand. The door he thought he had missed became the door of the greatest lesson.
