Morning and Evening Azkar — The Believer’s Daily Fortress
Allah commands: “And remember your Lord much, and glorify Him in the evening and the morning.” (Quran 3:41) The morning and evening azkar are the daily fortress of a Muslim — a few minutes after Fajr and after Asr (or Maghrib) that bring protection, peace and reward for the whole day and night. Here are the most important ones, all from authentic sources.
1. Ayat al-Kursi (Quran 2:255)
Whoever recites it in the morning is protected until the evening, and whoever recites it in the evening is protected until the morning. (Al-Mustadrak of al-Hakim — Sahih) The Prophet ﷺ also confirmed that one who recites it after every obligatory prayer will have nothing between him and Paradise except death. (Sunan an-Nasa’i — Sahih)
2. The Three Quls (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) — 3 Times Each
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Say: He is Allah, the One (Al-Ikhlas), and the two chapters of refuge (Al-Falaq and An-Nas), three times in the morning and three times in the evening — they will suffice you against everything.”
(Sunan Abu Dawud 5082 · Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3575 — Hasan)
3. Sayyid al-Istighfar — The Master Dua for Forgiveness
Meaning: “O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I abide by Your covenant and promise as much as I am able. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favour upon me, and I confess my sin — so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.”
Whoever says it with certainty in the morning and dies that day enters Paradise; likewise in the evening.
(Sahih al-Bukhari 6306)
4. The Dua of Complete Protection — 3 Times
Meaning: “In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.”
The Prophet ﷺ said nothing will harm the one who says it three times in the morning and three times in the evening.
(Sunan Abu Dawud 5088 · Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3388 · Sunan Ibn Majah 3869 — Hasan)
5. Contentment with Allah — 3 Times
Transliteration: Raditu billahi Rabba, wa bil-Islami dina, wa bi-Muhammadin (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) nabiyya.
Meaning: “I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, with Islam as my religion, and with Muhammad ﷺ as my Prophet.”
Whoever says it in the morning and evening, it becomes binding upon Allah to please him on the Day of Resurrection.
(Sunan Abu Dawud 5072 · Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 2623 — Hasan)
6. SubhanAllahi wa Bihamdihi — 100 Times
Whoever says it 100 times in the morning (and evening), his sins are forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea, and no one will bring anything better on the Day of Resurrection except one who said the same or more.
(Sahih al-Bukhari 6405 · Sahih Muslim 2691)
7. The Last Two Verses of Surah Al-Baqarah — At Night
(Quran 2:285–286)
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 5009 · Sahih Muslim 808)
Common Questions
When exactly should morning and evening azkar be read?
Morning azkar: after Fajr until sunrise (they may be completed until mid-morning if missed). Evening azkar: after Asr — this is the preferred time in the Hanafi school — and they may be read up to Maghrib and shortly after.
Can I read them without wudu?
Yes. Azkar and duas do not require wudu, though being in a state of purity is better.
What if I cannot read all of them?
Begin with Ayat al-Kursi, the three Quls and the dua of protection (no. 4). A small amount done daily is better than a large amount done rarely.
Conclusion
Ten to fifteen minutes, twice a day — that is the price of a protected day and a peaceful night. Keep a fixed set, read with understanding, and the azkar will become the sweetest habit of your life.
