How to Memorize the 99 Names of Allah — And Why It Changes Your Life
The Prophet ﷺ gave us an extraordinary promise:
“Allah has ninety-nine names — one hundred minus one. Whoever learns them by heart (ahsaha) will enter Paradise.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 2736 · Sahih Muslim 2677)
The word ahsaha means more than counting. The scholars explain it includes: memorizing the Names, understanding their meanings, and calling upon Allah by them — as Allah Himself commands:
“And to Allah belong the most beautiful names, so call upon Him by them.” (Quran 7:180)
The famous enumerated list of the 99 Names is narrated in Jami’ at-Tirmidhi (3507); scholars have discussed the chain of that particular list, while the promise itself is firmly established in Bukhari and Muslim.
The Easy Memorization Method (5 Names a Day)
Step 1 — Take five Names daily. At five a day, you finish all 99 in just twenty days. Group them as they traditionally appear: Ar-Rahman, Ar-Rahim, Al-Malik, Al-Quddus, As-Salam…
Step 2 — Learn each Name with its meaning. A Name without meaning slips away; a Name with meaning stays. For example, Al-Ghafoor — the Most Forgiving; Ar-Razzaq — the Ultimate Provider; As-Sami’ — the All-Hearing.
Step 3 — Attach each Name to a moment of your day. Woke up healthy? Ash-Shafi healed and protected. Received unexpected provision? That is Ar-Razzaq. Wronged someone? You need Al-Ghafoor. Living the Names fixes them in the heart.
Step 4 — Revise backwards every Friday. Each week, recite the week’s Names in reverse order. Anything you can say backwards, you truly know.
Step 5 — Call upon Allah by His Names in dua. “Ya Rahman, irhamni. Ya Ghafoor, ighfir li.” Using the Names in dua is part of ihsaa’ and a cause of acceptance.
The Benefits of Learning the Names
- Paradise — the promise of the Prophet ﷺ himself (Bukhari 2736).
- Stronger, answered duas — Allah commands us to call Him by His Names (Quran 7:180).
- Knowledge of Allah (ma’rifah) — you cannot love or fear One you do not know; the Names are the greatest door to knowing Him.
- Peace of heart — “Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” (Quran 13:28)
- Character transformation — knowing Al-Haleem (the Forbearing) makes you forbearing; knowing Al-Kareem (the Generous) makes you generous.
Common Questions
Must I memorize them in order?
The order of the list is not a condition. Memorizing them in the traditional order simply makes revision easier.
Is there a fixed reward for particular Names for particular needs?
No authentic hadith assigns specific Names as formulas for specific worldly outcomes. The established reward is the general one: Paradise, nearness to Allah, and accepted dua. Be cautious of claims without references.
How long does it take a child to learn them?
With five Names a day and weekly revision, most children complete them in about a month — and remember them for life.
Conclusion
Ninety-nine Names, twenty days, one unforgettable promise. Start today with just five Names, and let every Name become a door between you and your Lord.
