Sunnahs of Morning & Evening Adhkar in the Quran & Sunnah
Sunnahs of Morning & Evening Adhkar in the Quran & Sunnah
Etiquette of the morning and evening adhkar in Islam (adab adhkar as-sabah wa al-masa): the divinely appointed times of remembrance, the master prayer for forgiveness, the protecting verses and words, and building the daily fortress — from the Quran and authentic Sunnah. The complete lists are on DeenHub’s Morning Adhkar and Evening Adhkar pages.
Part 1: Morning and Evening Remembrance in the Light of the Quran
1. Remember Allah much — and glorify Him in the morning and the evening.
Allah says:
and proclaim His purity at morn and eve. (Surah al-Ahzab 33:42)
Lesson: The command is quantity with timing: a great deal of remembrance, anchored to the day’s two gates — its opening and its closing.
2. Glorify Allah when you enter the evening and when you enter the morning.
Allah says:
So, proclaim Allah’s purity (from shirk) when you see the evening and when you see the morning. (Surah ar-Rum 30:17)
Lesson: Tasbih at both ends of the day, and praise in the heavens and the earth at afternoon and noon — the whole day is wrapped in remembrance.
3. Seek forgiveness for your shortcoming, and glorify with your Lord’s praise at evening and at dawn.
Allah says:
So, be patient - surely the promise of Allah is true - and seek forgiveness for your sins, and proclaim the purity and praise of your Lord in the afternoon and at dawn. (Surah Ghafir 40:55)
Lesson: Even the Prophet ﷺ was taught this rhythm: patience, istighfar, and tasbih in the ‘ashiyy (evening) and the ibkar (early morning).
Part 2: The Morning and Evening Adhkar in the Light of the Sunnah
1. Begin with the master prayer for forgiveness — Sayyid al-Istighfar.
Allahumma anta rabbi la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana ‘abduk, wa ana ‘ala ‘ahdika wa wa‘dika mastata‘t, a‘udhu bika min sharri ma sana‘t, abu’u laka bi-ni‘matika ‘alayya wa abu’u bi-dhanbi faghfir li, fa-innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa ant — Whoever says it in the morning, convinced of it, and dies that day before evening, will be among the people of Paradise; and whoever says it in the evening, convinced of it, and dies that night, will be among the people of Paradise.
2. Recite Ayat al-Kursi at night — a guardian from Allah stays over you.
The Prophet ﷺ confirmed the words of the one who had guarded the zakah: “Whoever recites it when he goes to his bed, there will remain over him a guardian from Allah, and no Shaytan will approach him until the morning.” It is also read among the morning and evening adhkar.
3. The last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah at night will suffice you.
“Whoever recites the two verses at the end of Surah al-Baqarah in a night, they will suffice him” — suffice him against every evil, and some said: suffice him in place of the night prayer.
4. The three Quls, three times each, morning and evening — they suffice against everything.
He said to ‘Abdullah ibn Khubayb: “Say: Qul huwallahu ahad, and the two refuge surahs, three times in the evening and three times in the morning — they will suffice you against everything.”
5. In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can harm — three times.
Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma‘a ismihi shay’un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama’i wa huwas-sami‘ul-‘alim — No servant says it three times in the morning and three times in the evening and anything harms him.
6. Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi — one hundred times a day wipes the slate.
“Whoever says: Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi (glory and praise be to Allah), one hundred times in a day, his sins will be forgiven even if they were like the foam of the sea.”
7. La ilaha illallah, wahdahu la sharika lah — one hundred times, a fortress for the day.
Whoever says it one hundred times in a day: it is equal to freeing ten slaves, one hundred good deeds are written for him, one hundred sins are erased from him, and it is a protection for him from Shaytan that whole day until the evening.
8. The dua he taught for every morning and every evening.
Allahumma bika asbahna, wa bika amsayna, wa bika nahya, wa bika namut, wa ilaykan-nushur — O Allah, by You we enter the morning and by You we enter the evening; by You we live and by You we die, and to You is the Resurrection. He taught his Companions to say it every morning; and in the evening it ends: “...wa ilaykal-masir” — and to You is the final return.
Lesson: The complete confirmed lists, with sources, are gathered on the Morning Adhkar and Evening Adhkar pages of DeenHub Global — read them after Fajr and after ‘Asr (or Maghrib) every day, with a present heart.
9. After the Fajr prayer, ask for beneficial knowledge, pure provision and accepted deeds.
Allahumma inni as’aluka ‘ilman nafi‘an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa ‘amalan mutaqabbalan — O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provision, and deeds that are accepted. Umm Salamah reported that the Prophet ﷺ would say this as he finished the Fajr prayer and gave the salam.
10. In the evening, seek refuge in Allah’s perfect words.
A‘udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq — I take refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created. A man stung by a scorpion could not sleep all night; the Prophet ﷺ said to him: “Had you said in the evening: ‘I take refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created,’ nothing would have harmed you.”
