Etiquette & Sunnahs of Perfume (At-Tayyib) in the Quran & Sunnah
Perfume in Islam (at-tayyib): the Prophet’s ﷺ love of fragrance, the musk-carrier, gifts of scent that are never refused, and the best perfume for ihram, from the Quran and authentic Sunnah.
Part 1: Adornment in the Light of the Quran
1. “Take your adornment at every mosque.”
Allah says:
O children of ’Ādam, take on your adornment at every mosque. Eat and drink and do not be extravagant. Surely, He does not like the extravagant. (Surah Al-A'raf 7:31)
Adornment — cleanliness, fine clothing and fragrance — is commanded as part of presenting oneself before Allah and His people, not as vanity.
Part 2: Fragrance in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ
1. He ﷺ never refused a gift of scent.
Thumamah ibn ‘Abdullah said: Anas never used to refuse a gift of scent, and he used to say that the Prophet ﷺ never used to refuse a gift of scent.
Lesson: Fragrance is the gift that is always accepted — refusing it refuses a small honour between brothers.
2. The musk-carrier: the company you keep perfumes you.
“The similitude of good company and bad company is that of the owner of musk and the one blowing bellows: the owner of musk will either offer you some free, sell you some, or you will at least catch a pleasant fragrance from him; and the bellows-blower will either burn your clothes or leave you with a foul smell.”
Lesson: Perfume is the Prophet’s ﷺ own image for friendship — sit with the people whose presence leaves fragrance on you.
3. He ﷺ kept a sikkah of perfume and used it.
Anas ibn Malik reported that the Prophet ﷺ had a sikkah — a small container of blended perfume — with which he used to perfume himself.
Lesson: Fragrance was part of his ﷺ kept routine, carried with him like the siwak — not an ornament for occasions only.
4. Three gifts are not refused — among them fragrance.
“There are three that are not refused: cushions, oil (fragrance), and milk.”
Lesson: Small kindnesses carry the etiquette of acceptance; turning them away breaks a heart over nothing.
5. The best perfume he could find — for ihram.
‘Aishah reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to enter ihram, he perfumed himself with the best of perfumes he could find — until she would see it glistening on his head and in his beard.
Lesson: For the greatest journeys of worship he ﷺ chose the finest fragrance available — beauty offered to Allah, before the state in which perfume is set aside.
