Etiquette of Truthfulness (As-Sidq) in the Quran & Sunnah

Truthfulness in Islam (as-sidq): being with the truthful, sidq as the road to Paradise, lying as the road to the Fire, and truth as the heart’s tranquility, from the Quran and authentic Sunnah.

Part 1: Truthfulness in the Light of the Quran

1. “O you who believe, fear Allah and be with the truthful.”

Allah says:

O you who believe, fear Allah, and be in the company of the truthful. (Surah At-Tawbah 9:119)

The command is not only to speak truth but to keep the company of the truthful (as-sadiqin) — sidq is caught from its people as much as it is practised alone.

2. …the truthful men and the truthful women…

Allah says:

Surely, Muslim men and Muslim women, believing men and believing women, devout men and devout women, truthful men and truthful women, patient men and patient women, humble men and humble women, and the men who give Sadaqah (charity) and the women who give Sadaqah, and the men who fast and the women who fast, and the men who guard their private parts (against evil acts) and the women who guard (theirs), and the men who remember Allah much and the women who remember (Him) - for them, Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward. (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:35)

In the great list of the ten qualities for whom Allah has prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward, the truthful stand in their rank — named by Allah among the people of His promise.

Part 2: Sidq in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ

1. Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness to Paradise.

“Truth leads one to Paradise and virtue leads one to Paradise; and a person keeps on speaking the truth until he is recorded as a truthful person (siddiq) with Allah.”

Lesson: Sidq is a road with stations: the word, then the character, then the name written with Allah.

2. And lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness to the Fire.

The same narration completes the map: “Lying leads to wickedness and wickedness leads to the Fire; and a person keeps on telling lies until he is recorded as a liar with Allah.”

Lesson: No lie stays small; each one is a step on a road whose end its speaker would never choose at the start.

3. Truth is tranquility — falsehood is doubt.

Al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali said: I memorised from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: “Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt — for truthfulness is tranquility, and falsehood is doubt.”

Lesson: The heart itself bears witness: the truthful word settles, the false word itches. Listen to the unease; it is a teacher.
