Etiquette of Gentleness (Ar-Rifq) in the Quran & Sunnah
Gentleness in Islam (ar-rifq): Allah is Gentle and loves gentleness in every matter, the Fire forbidden to the mild and easy person, and rifq with the ignorant, from the Quran and authentic Sunnah.
Part 1: Gentleness in the Light of the Quran
1. “Had you been harsh and hard-hearted, they would have scattered from around you.”
Allah says:
So, (O Prophet) it is through mercy from Allah that you are gentle to them. Had you been rough and hard-hearted, they would have dispersed from around you. So, pardon them, and seek Forgiveness for them. Consult them in the matter and, once you have taken a decision, place your trust in Allah. Surely, Allah loves those who place their trust in Him. (Surah Aal-e-Imran 3:159)
Allah explains the Prophet’s ﷺ magnetic leadership by one cause: gentleness from Allah’s mercy. Harshness empties a room; rifq fills it.
2. Repel evil with what is better — and the enemy becomes a devoted friend.
Allah says:
Good and evil are not equal. Repel (evil) with what is best, and you will see that the one you had mutual enmity with him will turn as if he were a close friend. (Surah Fussilat 41:34)
The verse promises a transformation no argument can achieve: answer ugliness with something better, and enmity itself melts into warm friendship.
Part 2: Rifq in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ
1. Allah is Gentle (Rafiq) and loves gentleness in every matter.
When a group of Jews greeted the Prophet ﷺ with a twisted salam (“as-samu ‘alaykum” — death upon you) and ‘Aishah answered them sharply, he ﷺ restrained her and said: “Allah is Gentle and loves gentleness in all things.”
Lesson: Even answering an insult has an adab: the poison is not handed back in a sharper cup.
2. Forbidden to the Fire: every gentle, mild, easy person.
“Shall I not inform you of the one who is forbidden to the Fire — or to whom the Fire is forbidden? Every person who is near (approachable), mild, gentle and easy (with people).”
Lesson: The rough, difficult, forbidding manner is not strength of religion; the Fire is forbidden to the opposite.
3. Gentleness with the Bedouin who urinated in the mosque.
A Bedouin urinated in a corner of the mosque and the people rushed at him. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Leave him, and pour a bucket of water over his urine. You have been sent to make things easy, not to make them difficult.”
Lesson: With the ignorant, the Sunnah’s first tool is water and patience — not the shout that makes a man hate the mosque forever.
