Etiquette of Calling to Allah (Ad-Da‘wah) in the Quran & Sunnah
Calling to Allah in Islam (ad-da‘wah): wisdom and beautiful exhortation, conveying even a single verse, one guided soul above red camels, and the caller’s multiplied reward, from the Quran and authentic Sunnah.
Part 1: The Call in the Light of the Quran
1. Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction.
Allah says:
Invite (people) to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good counsel. And argue with them in the best of manners. Surely, your Lord knows best the one who deviates from His way, and He knows best the ones who are on the right path. (Surah An-Nahl 16:125)
The method is revealed with the mission: wisdom, beautiful exhortation, and argument in the best manner — the truth is not served by harshness that drives people from it.
2. “And who is better in speech than one who calls to Allah…?”
Allah says:
Who can be better in words than the one who calls towards Allah, and acts righteously and says, “I am one of those who submit themselves (to Allah)”? (Surah Fussilat 41:33)
The finest speech a tongue can carry is the call to Allah joined with righteous deeds and the open declaration: I am of the Muslims.
3. “This is my way: I call to Allah upon clear sight.”
Allah says:
Say, “This is my way. I call (people) to Allah with full perception, both I and my followers. Pure is Allah; and I am not among those who associate partners with Allah.” (Surah Yusuf 12:108)
Yusuf’s way is the Prophet’s ﷺ way and his followers’: calling upon baseerah — knowledge and certainty, not imitation and noise.
Part 2: Da‘wah in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ
1. Convey from me — even a single verse.
“Convey (my teachings) to the people, even if it were a single verse.” — the command sets the lowest threshold at one verse and the widest audience at mankind.
Lesson: No one is excused from da‘wah by small knowledge: what you know with certainty, convey; what you do not know, leave.
2. One man guided through you — better than red camels.
On the day of Khaybar, giving the banner to ‘Ali, he ﷺ said: “Proceed calmly until you reach their courtyard, then invite them to Islam and inform them of what is obligatory upon them — for by Allah, if Allah guides a single man through you, it is better for you than red camels (the most precious of wealth).”
Lesson: One guided soul outweighs the finest fortune of Arabia; da‘wah is the trade whose profit is people.
3. The caller earns the reward of everyone who follows.
“He who calls to guidance will have a reward like the rewards of those who follow him, without that decreasing their rewards in anything.”
Lesson: Da‘wah is the charity that multiplies after you: every prayer of a guided man writes its like into your scroll.
4. Guiding someone to good is like doing it yourself.
A man came asking for a mount and the Prophet ﷺ had none to give; another man said: I will guide him to one who can carry him. He ﷺ said: “Whoever guides to a good deed is like the one who does it.”
Lesson: Even pointing the way — to a teacher, a book, a mosque, a helper — is written as the deed itself.
