Sayyidna Yunus (علیہ السلام) — The Call From the Depths of Darkness
Sayyidna Yunus (علیہ السلام) — The Call From the Depths of Darkness
Sayyidna Yunus (علیہ السلام) — The Call From the Depths of Darkness
Allah sent Sayyidna Yunus (علیہ السلام), the son of Matta, as a messenger to the people of Nineveh:
وَإِنَّ يُونُسَ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
> "And surely, Yūnus (Jonah) is from among the messengers."
He called his people to Allah, but they rejected him and persisted in their disbelief. He warned them that Allah's punishment would fall after three days — and then, in anger at their rejection, before Allah had given him leave to go, he walked away from them:
وَذَا ٱلنُّونِ إِذ ذَّهَبَ مُغَـٰضِبًا فَظَنَّ أَن لَّن نَّقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ فَنَادَىٰ فِى ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ أَن لَّآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبْحَـٰنَكَ إِنِّى كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
> "when he walked away in anger and thought that We would never put him to trouble."
What he did not yet know was that his people, after he had gone, realised a prophet never lies. They repented, turned to Allah in tears, and believed — and Allah lifted the punishment from them.
Yunus (علیہ السلام), meanwhile, reached a boat that was already loaded, and boarded it:
إِذْ أَبَقَ إِلَى ٱلْفُلْكِ ٱلْمَشْحُونِ
> "(Remember) when he ran away towards the boat that was already loaded."
Out on the water, the boat was caught in a storm and pounded by the waves, and it was feared it would sink. Lots were drawn, to choose one man to be cast off and lighten the load:
فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُدْحَضِينَ
> "Then he participated in drawing lots (to offload one of the passengers) and was the one who was defeated."
The lot fell to Yunus — a second time, and a third. Yet the people shrank from throwing a prophet of Allah into the water, so Yunus (علیہ السلام) cast himself into the sea:
فَٱلْتَقَمَهُ ٱلْحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌ
> "Then the fish swallowed him while he was reproaching his own self."
In darkness upon darkness — the fish's belly, the sea, the night — he reproached his own self, and called out to his Lord:
أَن لَّآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبْحَـٰنَكَ إِنِّى كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
> "There is no god but You. Pure are You. Indeed I was among the wrongdoers".
It was this tasbih — proclaiming Allah's purity, joined to a confession with no excuses — that saved him:
فَلَوْلَآ أَنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَبِّحِينَ
> "Had he not been of those who proclaim Allah’s purity,"
> "he would have definitely lived in its belly till the day when the dead will be raised."
And Allah answered him:
فَٱسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُۥ وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ مِنَ ٱلْغَمِّ ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُـۨجِى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
> "So We responded to him and rescued him from the distress. And this is how We rescue the believers."
The fish cast him out, and Allah brought him forth from that darkness:
۞ فَنَبَذْنَـٰهُ بِٱلْعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ سَقِيمٌ
> "Then We cast him ashore in the open while he was ill,"
He came ashore weak and ill, in open land with no shade. Then Allah showed him a mercy as gentle as the rescue itself:
وَأَنۢبَتْنَا عَلَيْهِ شَجَرَةً مِّن يَقْطِينٍ
> "and We caused a tree of... to grow over him."
And the mission he had walked away from was given back to him — the same people, now ready to listen:
وَأَرْسَلْنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰ مِا۟ئَةِ أَلْفٍ أَوْ يَزِيدُونَ
> "And We had sent him (as messenger) to one hundred thousand, or more."
> "So, they believed, then, We let them enjoy for a time."
So the story that began with a prophet walking away in anger ends with a whole people believing, and a prophet restored to them.

🌿 Stop and Think About This Scene
No pulpit, no audience, no light — a man inside a fish, inside the sea, inside the night. By every worldly measure, his call could reach no one. Yet it reached the only One it needed to reach. He did not begin by asking for rescue; he began by declaring Allah's purity and his own wrong.

❤️ The Greatest Lesson
Allah did not rescue Yunus (علیہ السلام) and then close the door behind him. He announced a standing promise: "And this is how We rescue the believers." The darkness changes — debt, illness, grief — but the door he found in the depths stands open to every believer who turns back and calls.

📚 Important Lessons From This Story
1. Never walk away from a duty in anger. Yunus (علیہ السلام) left his people before Allah gave him leave — and that lapse brought him into the belly of a fish.
2. Begin dua with Allah's purity and your own confession. His call held no excuses — only "Pure are You" and "Indeed I was among the wrongdoers."
3. Tasbih in easy times becomes rescue in hard times. He was saved because he was "of those who proclaim Allah's purity."
4. No place is beyond Allah's reach: if He heard a call from inside a fish at the bottom of the sea, He hears yours.
5. A people's sincere repentance is never too late. Nineveh rejected its prophet, then believed — and Allah let them enjoy for a time.

🏠 How Can We Apply This in Our Daily Lives?
When you make a mistake, do not run from it — turn back with the words of Yunus (علیہ السلام): "There is no god but You. Pure are You. Indeed I was among the wrongdoers."
Keep tasbih and istighfar alive in your easy days, so that your tongue finds them ready in distress.
Do not decide in anger what you would not decide in calm.
And never call any sinner beyond hope: a whole city that had rejected its prophet believed, and was spared.

🌹 The Most Beautiful Message
The fish was not his grave; it became the place of his most accepted prayer. Allah turned the darkest prison into a doorway of return, and told us why He preserved the story: "And this is how We rescue the believers." Whatever darkness surrounds you, the call that reached from the depths of the sea can reach from yours.

📖 What the Tafsir Says
From Ma'ariful Quran (Mufti Muhammad Shafi), on verse 88 of Surah Al-Anbiya — how this one prayer goes on rescuing believers:
> The prayer of Yunus (علیہ السلام) is invoked by all people at all times and for all their needs وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُنجِي الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (And this is how We rescue the believers - 21:88.) That is, just as We released Yunus (علیہ السلام) from his misery and distress, so do We deliver other believers (مُؤْمِنِينَ ) when they turn towards Us repenting their sins sincerely.
From Tafsir Ibn Kathir (Abridged), on verse 141 of Surah As-Saffat — why lots were drawn on the ship:
> This was because the ship was being pounded by the waves on all sides, and they were at risk of drowning, so they drew lots, and whoever lost would be thrown overboard so as to lighten the load. The Prophet of Allah Yunus, peace be upon him, lost the draw three times, but they did not want to throw him overboard.
