Sayyidna Musa (علیہ السلام) — "Never!" The Night the Sea Split Open

The command came at nightfall: move in the dark. Allah revealed to Sayyidna Musa (علیہ السلام) that he should lead His servants — the children of Isra'il, long held down under Pharaoh — out of Egypt under cover of night:

۞ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنْ أَسْرِ بِعِبَادِىٓ إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ
> "And We revealed to Mūsā saying, “Make My servants travel at night. You will be pursued.”"
Quran 26:52

Allah did not hide the danger: "You will be pursued." Musa (علیہ السلام) marched anyway — obedience came first; the way out would be shown later.

By morning the Israelites' empty quarters were discovered, and Pharaoh's anger blazed. He sent his men into the cities to muster his troops, mocking the fugitives as "a small band" who had enraged him, boasting, "we are a host, well-armed."

But every step of that chase was carrying Pharaoh out of his own blessings. Allah expelled them from gardens and springs, and from treasures and a noble abode — and made the children of Isra'il inherit all such things.

At sunrise Pharaoh's host caught up with them, and the two hosts saw each other: the sea in front of the believers, Pharaoh's enormous army behind them. Fear ran through the ranks, and Musa's companions cried out:

فَلَمَّا تَرَٰٓءَا ٱلْجَمْعَانِ قَالَ أَصْحَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّا لَمُدْرَكُونَ
> "And when the two hosts saw each other, the companions of Mūsā said, “Surely we are overtaken.”"
Quran 26:61

But Musa (علیہ السلام) answered fear with one word first — "Never!" — and then with the reason for his calm:

قَالَ كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّ مَعِىَ رَبِّى سَيَهْدِينِ
> "He said, “Never! Indeed with me is my Lord. He will guide me.”"
Quran 26:62

He did not yet know how the way would open. He only knew Who was with him. Then the revelation came:

فَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنِ ٱضْرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلْبَحْرَ ۖ فَٱنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرْقٍ كَٱلطَّوْدِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
> "So We revealed to Mūsā saying, “Strike the sea with your staff.” So it was severed apart, and each part became like a big mountain."
Quran 26:63

Musa (علیہ السلام) struck the sea with his staff, and the water severed apart, each part standing like a big mountain. Then Allah brought Pharaoh and his host close to that very place — into the path between the walls of water. Musa and everyone with him crossed to safety, for Allah saved Musa and all those with him. And then the sea closed over the pursuers:

ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ
> "Then we drowned the others."
Quran 26:66

In one morning, the tyrant who had boasted "we are a host, well-armed" lost everything, and the "small band" he had mocked walked out of the sea saved — every one of them.

🌿 Stop and Think About This Scene

Picture that shoreline: deep water in front, an enormous army close behind. Every human calculation said the same thing — it is finished. Yet Musa (علیہ السلام), as the commentators note, was fully aware of the situation; he could see the army as clearly as everyone else. His certainty came not from a visible escape route, but from a promise. He said, "He will guide me," before he knew of any staff striking the sea.

❤️ The Greatest Lesson

When every door looks shut, the believer's strength is not in seeing the way out, but in knowing Who is with him. "Indeed with me is my Lord" was spoken while the sea was still closed and the army still coming. Allah's help does not always remove the sea — sometimes He makes a path straight through it.

📚 Important Lessons From This Story

1. Obey first; the way opens later. Musa (علیہ السلام) marched at night on Allah's command even though he had been told, "You will be pursued." His obedience did not wait for a map.
2. Say "Never!" to despair. When his companions cried that all was lost, Musa refused to let fear speak the final word: "Never! Indeed with me is my Lord. He will guide me."
3. Count Allah in your calculations. Sea ahead, army behind — a hopeless sum only if Allah is left out. With Him counted in, it was the beginning of the greatest rescue.
4. Pride digs its own grave. Pharaoh chased the people he called "a small band," and in chasing them was expelled from his gardens, springs and treasures — punished with the very things he wanted to inflict on them.
5. Allah's saving is complete. "We saved Mūsā and all those with him" — not one believer was lost, while not one of the pursuers remained alive.
6. Every rescue is a sign meant to teach. Allah closes the account by saying, "Surely, in this there is a sign" (Quran 26:67). The story is preserved so that hearts of every age learn the same trust.

🏠 How Can We Apply This in Our Daily Lives?

- When you feel trapped between a problem ahead and pressure behind, remember that shoreline, and say before you can see any path: "Indeed with me is my Lord."
- Do the step of obedience that is clear today, even if the rest of the road is not clear. Musa's first step was simply to march.
- Never judge by numbers or strength. The "small band" was the side Allah saved, and the "host, well-armed" was the side that drowned.
- Do not let panic have the last word around you. One calm voice of trust can steady many frightened hearts, as Musa's voice steadied his people.
- When Allah rescues you, treat it as a sign: thank Him, and let it strengthen your faith for the next test.

🌹 The Most Beautiful Message

The Lord who parted the sea describes Himself at the end of this very story:

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
> "...and indeed your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful."
Quran 26:68

Mighty — no army and no sea can resist Him. Merciful — He heard a frightened people and carried every one of them through the water. The same Lord is with every believer who trusts Him today.

📖 What the Tafsir Says

Ma'ariful Quran — on the moment the army reached right behind them:
> When the Pharaoh's army, which was in their pursuit, reached right behind them, all the people of Bani Isra'il called out ` We are caught'. And there was little doubt in their nabbing as the river was in front of them and the Pharaoh's enormous army behind them. Sayyidna Musa (علیہ السلام) was fully aware of the situation, but his belief in the promise of Allah was unshaken like a rock. He, therefore, replied firmly that they will never be caught.
Quran 26:61

Tafsir Ibn Kathir (Abridged) — on how Allah saved Musa and all those with him, and drowned the others:
> (And We saved Musa and all those with him. Then We drowned the others.) meaning: `We saved Musa and the Children of Israel and whoever followed their religion, and none of them were destroyed, but Fir`awn and his troops were drowned and not one of them remained alive, but was destroyed.'
Quran 26:65
