Ash-Shahid

The Witness

What Ash-Shahid Means

Ash-Shahid is from the root sh-h-d, to be present and to witness. Allah is Ash-Shahid: He is present with full knowledge of every event — nothing happens outside His witnessing, and no testimony is needed before Him, for He misses nothing. “Allah is Shahid over all things” (85:9); “Allah is ever Shahid over all things” (4:33). This witnessing is not passive: the verse in Aal-e-Imran warns those who cover the truth, “Allah is Shahid over what you do” (3:98). For the believer this name works in both directions. It restrains: the deal you could cheat in, the word no one would hear — Allah witnessed both. And it consoles: the injustice that no court recorded, the good deed no one thanked you for — Allah witnessed those too, and His witnessing is never lost.

Ash-Shahid in the Quran

“the One to whom belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is witness over every thing.”

Surah Al-Buruj — 85:9Read in the Quran →

“For everyone We have made heirs in what the parents and the nearest of kin have left. As for those with whom you have made a pledge, give them their shares. Surely, Allah is Witness over everything.”

Surah An-Nisa — 4:33Read in the Quran →

“Say, “O people of the Book, why do you reject the verses of Allah while Allah is witness to what you do?””

What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us

THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES

“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”

Calling Upon Allah by This Name

Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:

“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”

Surah Al-A’raf — 7:180Read in the Quran →

Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so call upon Him as Ya Shahid — for example, in your own words: “Ya Shahid, You witnessed what was done to me and what I did in secret; be my witness on the Day of Judgment, and forgive what You saw from me.” The practical lesson is honesty without an audience: sign the fair contract, return the extra change, keep the promise — because contracts witnessed by Allah, as 4:33 teaches, outlast every paper.
