Al-Baith
The Resurrector
What Al-Baith Means
Al-Baith is from the root b-‘-th, to send forth and to raise up. Allah is Al-Baith, the Resurrector: He who sent messengers to mankind in this world, and He who will raise every dead person from the grave on the Last Day. Honesty requires noting that in the Quran this name is established through its verb: “Allah will raise (yab’ath) those in the graves” (22:7), and “the Day Allah raises them all (yab’athuhum), then informs them of what they did” (58:6). No one will be missed, and nothing done will be missing either — the raising is for a full reckoning. For the believer, this name turns the grave from an ending into a doorway: the same Lord who created you the first time will raise you again, and every morning’s waking after the ‘death’ of sleep is a small rehearsal of that great rising.
Al-Baith in the Quran
“and that the Hour (of Doom) has to come, in which there is no doubt, and that Allah will raise again all those in the graves.”
“on the Day when Allah will resurrect them all together, and will tell them what they did; Allah has its full account, while they have forgotten it. Allah is witness to every thing.”
What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us
THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES
“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”
“Al-Bara’ reported that whenever Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) went to bed, he said:” O Allah, it is with Thine Name that I live and it is with Thine Name that I die.” And when he got up he used to say:” Praise is due to Allah, Who gave us life after our death (sleep) and unto Thee is resurrection.””
Calling Upon Allah by This Name
Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:
“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so call upon Him as Ya Baith — for example, in your own words: “Ya Baith, You will raise me from my grave as surely as You wake me from sleep; let me rise on that Day among the people of faith and obedience.” The practical lesson is in the Prophet’s own morning words, which end “and to Him is the resurrection” (Muslim 2711): begin each day remembering where the story ends, and the day is lived differently.
