Al-Haqq
The Truth
What Al-Haqq Means
Al-Haqq is from the root h-q-q: that which is firmly established, real and true. Allah is Al-Haqq, the absolute Truth — He exists with a reality that never fades, while everything besides Him perishes; His words are true, His promise is true, and worship of Him is the truth. “That is because Allah — He is Al-Haqq, and what they call upon besides Him is falsehood” (22:62). On the Day when recompense is paid in full, every soul “will know that Allah is Al-Haqq, Al-Mubin” (24:25), and Yunus leaves no third option: “What is there after the truth except error?” (10:32). For the believer this name is an anchor in an age of confusion: fashions of falsehood change every year, but Al-Haqq does not change, and whoever holds to Him holds to what will still be true at the end.
Al-Haqq in the Quran
“That is because Allah is the truth and that whatever they invoke beside Him is false and that Allah is the High, the Great.”
“On that day Allah will give them their rightful recompense in full, and they will know that Allah is the Very Truth who makes all things manifest.”
“So, that is Allah, your Lord in truth. And what is there after truth but error? To where, then, are you being diverted (by your whims)?”
What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us
THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES
“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”
“Narrated Ibn `Abbas: When the Prophet (ﷺ) got up at night to offer the Tahajjud prayer, he used to say: Allahumma lakal-hamd. Anta qaiyyimus-samawati wal-ard wa man fihinna. Walakal-hamd, Laka mulkus-samawati wal-ard wa man fihinna. Walakal-hamd, anta nurus-samawati wal-ard.”
Calling Upon Allah by This Name
Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:
“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so call upon Him as Ya Haqq — for example, in your own words: “Ya Haqq, show me the truth as truth and grant me to follow it, and show me falsehood as falsehood and grant me to avoid it.” The practical lesson is to take your measure of things from Him, not from crowds or trends: the Prophet ﷺ himself began his night prayer confessing “You are the Truth, and Your promise is the Truth” (Bukhari 1120).
