Al-Mudhill

Name 25 of 99

Al-Mudhill

The Giver of Dishonor

What Al-Mudhill Means

Al-Mudhill comes from the root dhal-lam-lam: lowliness and disgrace, the opposite of honor. In the dua Allah teaches His Prophet ﷺ, honor and dishonor stand side by side in His hand alone: ‘You honor whom You will and You dishonor whom You will’ (3:26). The Quran adds the sobering completion: ‘Whomever Allah humiliates, there is none to honor him’ (22:18) — no wealth, army, or reputation can lift the one Allah has brought low for his arrogance and rejection. Scholars explain that Allah’s humiliating of the stubborn is pure justice, never cruelty: it is the fitting end of those who glorified themselves and belittled His truth. For the believer, this name produces a healthy fear — not of people, but of the disgrace that sin brings — and a firm trust that no enemy can dishonor the one whom Allah honors.

Al-Mudhill in the Quran

“Say: “O Allah, O Lord of the Kingdom, You give kingdom to whom You will, and take kingdom away from whom You will; and You bestow honor on whom You will, and bring disgrace to whom You will. In your hand lies the betterment (of everyone). You are surely powerful over everything.”

Surah Ali ‘Imran — 3:26Read in the Quran →

“Have you not seen that to Allah prostrate all those in the skies and all those on the earth, and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the animals and many from mankind? And there are many on whom punishment has become due. And the one whom Allah puts to disgrace, there is none to give him respect. Surely Allah does what He wills.”

Calling Upon Allah by This Name

Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:

“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”

Surah Al-A’raf — 7:180Read in the Quran →

Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so you may say, in your own words: ‘Ya Mudhill — O You in whose hand is all honor and disgrace — I seek refuge in You from the humiliation of sin and from disgrace in this world and the next.’ The lesson of the name is where fear belongs: the believer does not fear people’s scorn, because they cannot truly dishonor anyone; he fears the deeds that bring a person low with Allah.
