Al-Muizz
The Giver of Honor
What Al-Muizz Means
Al-Muizz comes from the root ‘ayn-za-za: might, strength, and honor that cannot be overcome. The Quran teaches the believer to say: ‘O Allah, Owner of sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and strip it from whom You will; You honor whom You will and dishonor whom You will’ (3:26). Scholars explain that all ‘izzah — real honor and might — belongs to Allah entirely (35:10), and He grants a share of it to His Messenger and to the believers (63:8), even when they are few and weak in the eyes of the world. Honor with Allah is therefore never seized by wealth, tribe, or followers; it is given. For the believer, this name cuts the root of humiliation before people: if honor is Allah’s to give, it is sought from Him through obedience — ‘whoever desires honor’ is directed to its only source.
Al-Muizz in the Quran
“Say: “O Allah, O Lord of the Kingdom, You give kingdom to whom You will, and take kingdom away from whom You will; and You bestow honor on whom You will, and bring disgrace to whom You will. In your hand lies the betterment (of everyone). You are surely powerful over everything.”
“Whoever desires honor, then all honor lies with Allah alone. Towards Him ascends the pure word, and the righteous deed uplifts it. As for those who plot evils, for them there is a severe punishment, and their plot itself will perish.”
“They say, “If we return to Madīnah, the more honorable ones will drive out the meaner ones from there.” And to Allah belongs the honour, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know.”
What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us
THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES
“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”
Calling Upon Allah by This Name
Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:
“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
Allah teaches this very dua in His Book (3:26) and commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so you may say, in your own words: ‘Ya Muizz — O Giver of honor — honor me with faith and obedience, and make me content with the honor that comes from You alone.’ The lesson is in the verse itself: since honor and disgrace are both in His hand, the believer stops begging for dignity from people and asks the One who owns it all.
