الرَّزَّاقُ
Ar-Razzaq
The Provider
What Ar-Razzaq Means
Ar-Razzaq is built on the root r-z-q, provision — everything by which a creature lives and benefits. The Quran’s statement is unqualified: ‘Indeed, Allah is Ar-Razzaq, the Possessor of Power, the Strong’ (51:58). His providing is universal in reach: ‘How many a creature carries no provision of its own — Allah provides for it and for you’ (29:60). Every meal ever eaten, by man, beast or bird, came through His apportioning; no creature feeds itself independently, and no creature’s share can be taken by another. It was this conviction that made the Prophet ﷺ refuse to fix market prices, naming Allah as Ar-Razzaq (Abu Dawud 3451). For a believer the name produces a particular calm: he works and takes the lawful means — that is his duty — but his heart does not beg people for what only the Provider gives, and he neither panics in scarcity nor credits himself in plenty.
Ar-Razzaq in the Quran
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلرَّزَّاقُ ذُو ٱلْقُوَّةِ ٱلْمَتِينُ
“In fact, Allah is the All-Sustainer, Possessor of power, the Strong.”
“How many an animal there is that does not carry its provision. Allah gives provision to it as well as to you, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-knowing.”
What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us
THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES
“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”
“Narrated Anas ibn Malik: The people said: Messenger of Allah , prices have shot up, so fix prices for us. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Allah is the one Who fixes prices, Who withholds, gives lavishly and provides, and I hope that when I meet Allah, none of you will have any claim on…”
Calling Upon Allah by This Name
Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:
وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ فَٱدْعُوهُ بِهَا ۖ وَذَرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ يُلْحِدُونَ فِىٓ أَسْمَـٰٓئِهِۦ ۚ سَيُجْزَوْنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so you may call Him ‘Ya Razzaq — O Provider’ in your own words, for example asking Him for lawful, blessed provision for yourself and those in your care. Hold the prices hadith in mind (Abu Dawud 3451): the Prophet ﷺ left provision in Allah’s hand with complete trust. Work honestly, refuse unlawful earnings, and ask the Provider — your rizq was apportioned by the Strong, the Firm (51:58).
