Al-Fattah
The Opener
What Al-Fattah Means
Al-Fattah is built on the root f-t-h, which carries two connected works: opening, and deciding between disputants. As the Opener, Allah opens what is shut — doors of mercy, provision, victory and understanding; the surah named Al-Fath opens with His gift to the Prophet ﷺ, ‘We granted you a clear opening’ (48:1). As the Decider, He settles every dispute with perfect knowledge and justice: ‘He will gather us together, then He will decide between us in truth; He is Al-Fattah, the All-Knowing’ (34:26). The believers with Shu’ayb ﷺ prayed in both senses at once: ‘Our Lord, decide between us and our people in truth; You are the Best of deciders’ (7:89). For a believer this name is the answer to locked doors and unresolved cases. What people cannot open for him, Al-Fattah can; and what people will not judge fairly, Al-Fattah will — so he knocks at the right door, and leaves his disputes in the fairest hands.
Al-Fattah in the Quran
“Say, “Our Lord will assemble us together, then will judge between us with truth. He is the best Judge, the All-Knowing.””
“We will be forging a lie against Allah, if we were to turn to your faith after Allah has saved us from it. It is not for us that we turn to it unless Allah, our Lord, so wills. Our Lord has encompassed everything with His knowledge. In Allah we place our trust. -Our Lord, decide between us and our people, with truth, and You are the best of all judges.””
“Surely, We have granted you an open victory,”
What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us
THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES
“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”
“Abu Usaid reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When any one of you enters the mosque, he should say:” O Allah! open for me the doors of Thy mercy” ; and when he steps out he should say: ‘O Allah! I beg of Thee Thy Grace.”
Calling Upon Allah by This Name
Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:
“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so you may call Him ‘Ya Fattah — O Opener’ in your own words, for example asking Him to open a door of guidance or provision that looks shut. Begin with the very dua the Prophet ﷺ taught for entering the mosque — ‘O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy’ (Muslim 713) — and carry that habit to every closed door in life: ask the Opener first.
