Ar-Raqib

Name 43 of 99

Ar-Raqib

The Watchful

What Ar-Raqib Means

Ar-Raqib is from the root r-q-b, to watch over something without losing sight of it. Allah is Ar-Raqib: nothing of His creation is ever hidden from Him or absent from His knowledge — not a deed, a word, or a whisper of the heart. The Quran ends its command about kinship ties with this name: “Allah is ever Raqib over you” (4:1), and states it without limit: “Allah is Raqib over all things” (33:52). Even Isa, peace be upon him, told his Lord that after his time, Allah alone was the Raqib over his people (5:117). For the believer this name is both a warning and a comfort: a warning against sins committed in secret, and a comfort that no sincere act done unseen by people is ever unseen by Allah.

Ar-Raqib in the Quran

“O men, fear your Lord who created you from a single soul, and from it created its match, and spread many men and women from the two. Fear Allah in whose name you ask each other (for your rights), and fear (the violation of the rights of) the womb-relations. Surely, Allah is watchful over you.”

Surah An-Nisa — 4:1Read in the Quran →

“No women are lawful for you after this, nor is it lawful that you replace them (the present wives) with other wives, even though their goodness may attract you, except the bond-women you own. And Allah is watchful of every thing.”

Surah Al-Ahzab — 33:52Read in the Quran →

“I have not said to them anything but what You have ordered me to say, that is, ‘Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord’ and I was a witness over them as long as I was with them. But when You recalled me, You were the One watching over them. You are a witness over everything.”

Calling Upon Allah by This Name

Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:

“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”

Surah Al-A’raf — 7:180Read in the Quran →

Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so call upon Him as Ya Raqib — for example, in your own words: “Ya Raqib, You see me in every place and state; guard my heart when no eye is on me, and let the knowledge that You watch me keep me from every hidden sin.” The practical lesson is ihsan, exactly as the Prophet ﷺ defined it (Muslim 8): worship and behave as one who knows he is seen, so that private life matches public life.
