Al-Karim

Name 42 of 99

Al-Karim

The Most Generous

What Al-Karim Means

Al-Karim comes from the root k-r-m, which joins nobility with open-handed giving. Allah is Al-Karim: He gives generously without being asked, gives to those who thank Him and to those who turn away, and is never diminished by His giving. The Quran rebukes man with this very name: “O man, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, Al-Karim?” (82:6) — the One who honoured and provided for you all along. Sulayman’s words join the name with self-sufficiency: “my Lord is Ghaniyy, Karim” (27:40) — He needs nothing back from anyone. For the believer, this name teaches gratitude instead of ingratitude, and hope: the door of the Generous One is never closed to the one who asks, however often he has returned empty-handed before.

Al-Karim in the Quran

“O man! What has deceived you about your Gracious Lord,”

“Said the one who had the knowledge of the book, “I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you.” So when he saw it (the throne) well placed before him, he said, “This is by the grace of my Lord, so that He may test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful. Whoever is grateful is grateful for his own benefit, and whoever is ungrateful, then my Lord is Need-Free, Bountiful”.”

What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us

THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES

“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 2736 — read the hadith →

“Aishah narrated: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is your view if I know when the Night of Al-Qadr is, then what should I say in it?” He said: ‘Say: “O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning, [Generous,] You love pardon, so pardon me (Allāhumma innaka `Afuwwun [Karīmun], tuḥibbul-`afwa fa`fu `annī).’””

Calling Upon Allah by This Name

Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:

“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”

Surah Al-A’raf — 7:180Read in the Quran →

Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so call upon Him as Ya Karim — for example, in your own words: “Ya Karim, You gave me before I ever asked; pour out Your bounty on me again, forgive my ingratitude, and make me generous with what You gave me.” The practical lesson of this name is twofold: thank the Giver instead of being deceived into heedlessness (82:6), and reflect His generosity in small ways — give without keeping score, as He gives to you.
