Az-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam رضي الله عنه — The Disciple Who Answered Every Call

Az-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam رضي الله عنه — The Disciple Who Answered Every Call

A question went out over the lines of a besieged city.

It was not an order given to one named man.

It was a call thrown open to an entire army — and then it waited, in the open air, for whoever would rise and answer it.

The city was Madinah, and the day was the day of Al-Ahzab (i.e. Clans), when enemy forces had gathered against the believers and the city stood surrounded.

In days like those, information is precious.

What is the enemy planning?

Where are they moving?

What will they do next?

Someone had to go out to learn the news of the enemy and bring it back — a dangerous errand, the work of a scout, the kind of task a man might not return from.

So the Prophet ﷺ stood and asked the whole army:

"Who will bring me the information about the enemy on the day (of the battle) of Al-Ahzab (i.e. Clans)?" Sahih al-Bukhari 2846

One voice answered.

Az-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam رضي الله عنه said:

"I will." Sahih al-Bukhari 2846

But the story does not end there.

The Prophet ﷺ asked again — the very same call, a second time:

"Who will bring me the information about the enemy?" Sahih al-Bukhari 2846

And the same voice answered again, without hesitation:

"I will." Sahih al-Bukhari 2846

Then the Prophet ﷺ spoke words that fixed the name of Az-Zubayr in honour for all time:

> «إِنَّ لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ حَوَارِيًّا، وَحَوَارِيَّ الزُّبَيْرُ»

"Every prophet had a disciple and my disciple is Az-Zubair." Sahih al-Bukhari 2846

A disciple — a hawari — is a prophet's devoted helper and supporter: the one who stands nearest to him in loyalty, carries his trust, and answers when he calls.

Az-Zubayr did not receive this title because of his family, his wealth, or his position.

He received it because, twice in a row, when the call went out, he was the one who said: I will.

🌿 Stop and Think About This Scene

Notice how the call was made.

The Prophet ﷺ did not point at one man and command him.

He asked everyone.

The door of honour was open to the whole army — and one man walked through it.

Then notice the second asking.

A first answer can come from a rush of feeling in a single moment.

But when the question is repeated, the heart is tested again: is the readiness still there, now that the danger has had a moment to sink in?

Az-Zubayr's answer did not change.

His zeal did not cool between the first call and the second.

❤️ The Greatest Lesson for Our Lives Today

Most of us are not slow to love the truth.

We are slow to answer when answering costs us something.

A task is announced, and we look around to see who else will take it.

A need appears, and we wait to be asked personally — by name — a second and third time.

Az-Zubayr رضي الله عنه teaches us a different way: be the one whose answer is ready before the question is even finished.

And be the one who answers again.

Anyone can volunteer once, in one warm moment.

The disciple is the one whose I will is still standing when the call is repeated and the cost is clear.

📚 Important Lessons From This Hadith

1. Answer the call — and answer it again

The heartbeat of this story is not the first I will. It is the second one.

Real devotion is not a spark that flashes once; it is a flame that stays lit when the call comes again.

2. Volunteer for the task nobody is rushing to take

The errand was dangerous and unseen. No crowd would cheer for it, and no title was promised before it.

Yet the highest title came exactly there — in the task others were hesitating over.

3. Honour is earned by response, not by birth or wealth

Every prophet had a disciple. The Prophet ﷺ named his — and the reason given in the story is nothing but a man answering a call, twice.

In the sight of Allah, a ready heart outweighs a famous name.

4. Two small words can carry a whole life

I will.

They are among the shortest words a person can say — and on that day, they were enough to make a man the disciple of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

🏠 How Can We Apply This Hadith in Our Daily Lives?

👨‍👩‍👧 At Home

When something is needed in the house — an errand, a chore, help for a parent — do not wait for the request to travel around the room and land on someone else. Say: I will.

🕌 In the Masjid

Every masjid runs on quiet volunteers: the ones who arrive early, tidy the rows, teach a child, fix what is broken. These are the calls that go out again and again. Be the familiar voice that answers them.

🤝 In the Community

A neighbour needs a visit. A family needs food delivered quietly. A new Muslim needs a companion. The calls are rarely announced with a trumpet — but they are announced. Answer the first time, and be there the second time too.

🌹 The Most Beautiful Message of This Story

On the day of Al-Ahzab, an entire army heard the same question.

History remembers the one voice that answered it — twice.

May Allah make us people whose answer is ready when He calls: quick the first time, and still standing the second time.
