The Woman With Two Water-Skins ﷺ — Water for Forty Thirsty Men
The Woman With Two Water-Skins ﷺ — Water for Forty Thirsty Men
The Woman With Two Water-Skins ﷺ — Water for Forty Thirsty Men
The last hours of the night found a whole travelling company stretched out on the ground in the open desert, fast asleep — with the sun already climbing high above them.
Imran ibn Husayn رضي الله عنه was among them, and he tells the story himself. They "travelled the whole night" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571, and only when dawn approached did they stop to rest. But exhaustion took them completely: "sleep overwhelmed them till the sun rose high in the sky" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571.
The morning prayer had been missed — by the whole camp, with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sleeping among them.
What happened next was not shouting, and not blame.
"The first to get up was Abu Bakr" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571. Umar رضي الله عنه woke too. And then a beautiful detail of the Prophet's ﷺ ways: "Allah's Messengers used not to be awakened from his sleep, but he would wake up by himself" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571. So Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه sat down beside the Prophet's ﷺ head and began saying "Allahu-Akbar" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571, raising his voice with the Takbir, until the Prophet ﷺ woke.
And when he ﷺ woke to a sun already high and a prayer time already gone, there was no alarm and no scolding. They travelled on a little, and then "he dismounted and led us in the morning prayer" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571. The prayer was offered. The journey went on.
But one man had not joined the prayer at all.
When the Prophet ﷺ finished, he noticed — and he asked. One missing worshipper, in a whole travelling company, was not lost on him. "O so-and-so! What prevented you from offering the prayer with us?" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571
The man answered honestly: "I am Junub" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571 — he was in a state of major impurity, and there was no water to wash with. So the Prophet ﷺ "ordered him to perform Tayammam with clean earth" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571. "The man then offered the prayer" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571. No one left behind. No one left out of the prayer.
Then thirst took over the journey.
The Prophet ﷺ "ordered me and a few others to go ahead of him" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571 to scout for water. Imran رضي الله عنه says plainly: "We had become very thirsty" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571. And on their way they came across a sight no thirsty man forgets — a lady riding an animal, "hanging her legs between two water-skins" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571. Two full skins of water, in the middle of a waterless road.
They asked her eagerly: "Where can we get water?" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571
Her answer crushed the hope: "Oh ! There is no water." Sahih al-Bukhari 3571
They asked, "how far is your house from the water?" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571
"A distance of a day and a night travel." Sahih al-Bukhari 3571
A day and a night. That is how far the water was, and she was carrying her household's supply on a long road home. The scouts told her to come to Allah's Messenger ﷺ. She asked, "What is Allah's Messenger" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571 — she did not even know who he was. And the narration is honest about what followed: they brought her to him "against her will" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571.
Before the Prophet ﷺ she repeated what she had told them, and added one thing about herself: "she was the mother of orphans" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571. A mother of orphans, alone in the desert — and her whole wealth at that moment was the water in two skins.
Watch what the Prophet ﷺ did with a stranger's property. He did not seize it. He did not drain it. He "ordered that her two water-skins be brought and he rubbed the mouths of the water-skins" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571 — and then the men drank.
"we drank till we quenched our thirst and we were forty men" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571. Forty men, drinking their fill from a travelling woman's two skins. And it did not stop there: "We also filled all our waterskins and other utensils with water, but we did not water the camels" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571. Every skin and vessel they carried, filled. And her skins? "The waterskin was so full that it was almost about to burst" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571. After forty men and every vessel — her water stood fuller than before.
And the Prophet ﷺ was still not finished with her. "Bring what (foodstuff) you have." Sahih al-Bukhari 3571 So "some dates and pieces of bread were collected for the lady" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571 from what the men had with them. The stranger who had arrived unwilling, worried about her water, went home carrying food as well.
Then she stood before her own people and gave her report:
> «لَقِيتُ أَسْحَرَ النَّاسِ، أَوْ هُوَ نَبِيٌّ كَمَا زَعَمُوا»
"I have met either the greatest magician or a prophet as the people claim." Sahih al-Bukhari 3571
She said what she had seen, exactly as she had seen it — no more, no less. And hear the end: "So Allah guided the people of that village through that lady" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571. "She embraced Islam and they all embraced Islam" Sahih al-Bukhari 3571. One woman. One truthful report at home. One whole village guided.

🌿 Stop and Think About This Scene
Hold the whole day in your mind.
It began with failure: an entire camp, including the best of men, sleeping through the dawn prayer after a night of travel. It continued with thirst so real that men were sent ahead scanning the road for water.
And through both, one man stayed calm, attentive, and generous — noticing the single worshipper who had stayed back, protecting a stranger's water while his own men were desperate, and sending her home better off than she arrived.
The miracle in this story is not only the water. It is the character that surrounded the water.

❤️ The Greatest Lesson
When things go wrong — a prayer slept through, a road without water — the first thing that breaks in most of us is our composure. We shout. We blame. We panic.
The Prophet ﷺ did none of that. The prayer was missed; he led it, and the journey resumed. A man was missing from the rows; he asked about him personally and found him a way back into the prayer. His men were desperate with thirst; still, a strange woman's property was handled with honour before her own eyes.
Calm is not the absence of problems. Calm is refusing to let problems make you unjust, unkind, or careless.

📚 Important Lessons From This Hadith
1. When a worship is missed, respond with calm, not chaos
The whole camp overslept, yet nobody was screamed at or shamed. The Prophet ﷺ travelled a little, dismounted, and led the prayer. What was missed was made up, and life went on. Guilt that produces action is useful; panic produces only noise.
2. No individual is lost in the crowd
Out of a whole company, one man stood apart from the prayer — and the Prophet ﷺ noticed him and asked after him. Leaders, teachers, parents: the one who quietly stays back often most needs to be asked.
3. Another person's property stays sacred, even in your emergency
The woman was brought unwilling, and the men were desperate — yet her water was used in her presence, and she was not sent away poorer. Need never licenses taking what belongs to someone else.
4. Allah's provision flows through small things honestly placed before Him
Two skins of water became enough for forty men and every vessel they owned — and still stood nearly bursting. What is little in our hands is not little when Allah puts blessing in it.
5. What you report at home can guide a whole household
The woman simply told her people what she had witnessed — no sermon, just an honest account — and a village embraced Islam through it. The truthful things we say at our own tables carry further than we think.

🏠 How Can We Apply This Hadith in Our Daily Lives?
When you miss Fajr, or your child does, let the response in your home be the Prophetic one: get up, pray, and carry on — without a morning of shouting that teaches fear instead of love for prayer.
When someone in your family, class, or team quietly withdraws, do not let the crowd hide them from you. Ask, as he ﷺ asked, with genuine concern: what prevented you?
When you are in need, watch how you treat what belongs to others: their time, their money, their trust. Take only with honour, and where you can, send people away better off than they came — as the woman was sent home with dates and bread besides her water.
And when Allah shows you something good, say it plainly at home, exactly as it happened. You never know whose guidance is waiting on your honest words.

🌹 The Most Beautiful Message of This Story
A day that began with a missed prayer and a road without water ended with a village entering Islam.
Nothing was wasted in between: the sleep was answered with a prayer, the absent man with a question, the thirst with blessing, and the stranger with honour and a gift of food.
This is the way of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — every problem met with calm, every person with care, and every blessing passed on until it reached a whole village through one woman's truthful tongue.
