Zaynab bint Jahsh رضي الله عنها — "Shall We Be Destroyed Even Though There Are Pious Persons Among Us?"

Zaynab bint Jahsh رضي الله عنها — "Shall We Be Destroyed Even Though There Are Pious Persons Among Us?"

A door opened, and fear came in with him.

Zaynab bint Jahsh رضي الله عنها knew the face of the Prophet ﷺ in its calm, the way a wife knows it — in the doorway, in the middle of ordinary days.

That day, she read something else on it before he spoke a single word.

Her narration begins with exactly that: he "once came to her in a state of fear" Sahih al-Bukhari 3346

Sit with that picture.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ — entering a room of his own house afraid.

Not afraid for himself. But something had been shown to him, and he came carrying it to the people he loved, while there was still time to warn them.

And the first words out of that fear were not panic. They were the words of tawhid, the anchor of everything:

> «لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ»

"None has the right to be worshipped but Allah." Sahih al-Bukhari 3346

Then the warning itself:

"Woe unto the Arabs from a danger that has come near." Sahih al-Bukhari 3346

A danger. Near. Not described, not explained — and then, instead of a description, a gesture. He raised his hand and showed its size:

"An opening has been made in the wall of Gog and Magog like this," Sahih al-Bukhari 3346 "making a circle with his thumb and index finger" Sahih al-Bukhari 3346

A circle a fingertip could close around.

That small.

The wall still stood; nothing had poured through it yet. But in that trusted wall there was now an opening — and he measured it with two fingers, so no one would mistake how these things begin.

Zaynab رضي الله عنها heard the words, and her mind went where a believer's mind goes.

Not to herself.

To everyone.

> «أَنَهْلِكُ وَفِينَا الصَّالِحُونَ»

"O Allah's Messenger! Shall we be destroyed even though there are pious persons among us?" Sahih al-Bukhari 3346

Think about who was asking, and where. A wife of the Prophet ﷺ, in his own household, in the city of the finest generation that ever walked the earth. If the mere presence of righteous people could hold destruction back, that city would have been untouchable.

Her question is every comfortable generation's question: surely we are safe — look at the good people among us.

His answer was one line. It did not soften her question. It answered it completely:

> «نَعَمْ، إِذَا كَثُرَ الْخُبْثُ»

"Yes, when the evil person will increase." Sahih al-Bukhari 3346

Nothing more is recorded. The narration ends there — a frightened entrance, a small circle of two fingers, a wife's question, and an answer that has outlived every empire since.

🌿 Stop and Think About This Scene

She read his face before she heard his words. That is what love does — it notices.

And notice what his fear produced. Not silence, not despair. A warning, spoken clearly, in his own home: "Woe unto the Arabs from a danger that has come near." Sahih al-Bukhari 3346

The Prophet ﷺ took the unseen seriously. He did not laugh it off, nor keep it to himself.

And notice the size of what he showed her. Not a collapse. Not a flood. An opening, "like this" — small enough to circle with a thumb and a finger.

Destruction did not arrive that day. A crack did.

That is how it always begins: not with the wall falling, but with the wall opening — quietly, in one place, while everyone still calls the wall strong.

❤️ The Greatest Lesson for Our Lives Today

The pious are not a shield by their mere presence.

Every generation comforts itself the same way: there are righteous people among us — scholars, elders, people of prayer — so how could destruction reach us?

The Prophet ﷺ answered that comfort directly:

"Yes, when the evil person will increase." Sahih al-Bukhari 3346

Presence is not protection.

Goodness that stays private and sealed inside a house, while evil multiplies in the street outside, does not — by existing alone — hold anything back.

Goodness protects a community when it is alive in it: practised, taught, and standing in the way of wrong. What decides a people's fate, in this hadith, is not whether good people are present. It is whether evil is increasing.

Frightening — and hopeful, because increase can slow and cracks can be watched. His answer turns our eyes from counting the righteous around us back toward our own conduct.

📚 Important Lessons From This Hadith

1. The presence of pious people is not, by itself, a guarantee

Zaynab رضي الله عنها asked about the best generation, in the best city, in the Prophet's ﷺ own lifetime — and the answer was still: "Yes, when the evil person will increase." Sahih al-Bukhari 3346

No community, in any century, gets to say: we are safe because of who lives among us.

---

2. She asked about "us", not about herself

Her first thought was not her own safety. "Shall we be destroyed even though there are pious persons among us?" Sahih al-Bukhari 3346

That is the instinct of a believer: fear that is shared. She heard of a danger, and immediately asked about the whole people standing under it.

---

3. Great dangers begin as openings "like this"

He did not describe the wall in ruins. He described an opening, and showed a circle of two fingers.

Watch the first cracks: a wrong tolerated in a home, a habit nobody challenges, a sin slowly becoming normal in a neighbourhood. By the time a wall is falling, it is too late to ask when it opened.

---

4. Take the unseen seriously — without panic

The Prophet ﷺ spoke in fear and in truth, and the matter rested exactly where his answer put it: on conduct. "Yes, when the evil person will increase." Sahih al-Bukhari 3346

Not terror. Not denial. A warning received, and a responsibility returned to the people who heard it.

---

5. Love does not always soften the truth

He ﷺ could have comforted her. Instead he answered honestly — because she had asked honestly, and a frightening truth, spoken in time, is itself a mercy.

🏠 How Can We Apply This Hadith in Our Daily Lives?

🏠 In Our Homes

Do not rest on being a practising family while an opening widens quietly in the house — in what is watched, tolerated, and no longer mentioned. Walls are guarded at the crack, not at the collapse.

🧒 With Our Children

Children will hear frightening things and ask frightening questions. Answer the way he ﷺ answered her: truthfully, calmly, bringing them back to what they can do.

🤝 In Our Communities

Never measure a community's safety by the good people in it. Measure it by direction: is evil increasing, unopposed — or being resisted, corrected, and pushed back?

🕯️ In Ourselves

Each of us stands on one side of his answer: either our presence resists the increase of evil, or our silence is part of the increase itself. Private piety must become visible conduct.

🌹 The Most Beautiful Message of This Story

A wife asked the question every generation asks in its age of comfort:

Will we really be destroyed — even though there are pious persons among us?

And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who had entered her room in fear for his people, left her — and us — with an answer that is also a task:

"Yes, when the evil person will increase." Sahih al-Bukhari 3346

So the work is not to count the righteous around us and relax.

The work is to make sure evil does not increase — beginning in the smallest circle of all: our own hearts, and our own homes.
