The Guests Who Brought Glad Tidings — Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) and the Angels at His Door
Visitors came to the house of Sayyidna Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) one day, and they entered with a greeting of peace — little knowing, it seemed, how much more than a greeting they carried with them. The Qur'an tells us:
وَلَقَدْ جَآءَتْ رُسُلُنَآ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ بِٱلْبُشْرَىٰ قَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمًا ۖ قَالَ سَلَـٰمٌ ۖ فَمَا لَبِثَ أَن جَآءَ بِعِجْلٍ حَنِيذٍ
> "And Our emissaries came to Ibrāhīm with the good news. They greeted him with “Salām (peace).” He said, “Salām.” Then he took not much time in bringing a roasted calf."
Quran 11:69
Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) was a host who never kept a guest waiting. Taking his visitors for travellers, he lost no time and brought a roasted calf, and set it before them. But then he noticed something that troubled him deeply: their hands did not reach towards the food. A guest who will not eat — his heart began to fear these strangers, until they spoke and opened the truth:
فَلَمَّا رَءَآ أَيْدِيَهُمْ لَا تَصِلُ إِلَيْهِ نَكِرَهُمْ وَأَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةً ۚ قَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفْ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمِ لُوطٍ
> "So, when he noticed their hands not acceding to it, he found them strange and felt scared of them. They said, “Be not scared. We have been sent to the people of LūT.”"
Quran 11:70
His wife Sarah was standing nearby, and she laughed. And then the guests turned their glad tidings towards her — tidings beyond every hope of age:
وَٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ قَآئِمَةٌ فَضَحِكَتْ فَبَشَّرْنَـٰهَا بِإِسْحَـٰقَ وَمِن وَرَآءِ إِسْحَـٰقَ يَعْقُوبَ
> "His wife was standing (nearby), and she laughed. Thus We gave her the good news about IsHāq, and about Ya‘qūb after IsHāq."
Quran 11:71
Her amazement poured out in her own words:
قَالَتْ يَـٰوَيْلَتَىٰٓ ءَأَلِدُ وَأَنَا۠ عَجُوزٌ وَهَـٰذَا بَعْلِى شَيْخًا ۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَشَىْءٌ عَجِيبٌ
> "She said, “Woe to me! Shall I give birth to a child while I am an old woman and this is my husband, an old man? This is something amazing indeed.”"
Quran 11:72
The angels answered her wonder with gentle firmness, and with a blessing upon the whole household:
قَالُوٓا۟ أَتَعْجَبِينَ مِنْ أَمْرِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ رَحْمَتُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكَـٰتُهُۥ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ ٱلْبَيْتِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ حَمِيدٌ مَّجِيدٌ
> "They said, “Do you marvel at Allah’s command? Allah’s mercy and His blessings have always been upon you, O people of the house. Surely, He is Praiseworthy, Glorious.”"
Quran 11:73
When the fear had left Ibrahim's heart and the good news had reached him, this tender-hearted prophet did something beautiful: he began pleading with Allah for the people of Lut — the very people to whom these guests had been sent with punishment. Allah Himself tells us what sort of heart was pleading:
إِنَّ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ لَحَلِيمٌ أَوَّٰهٌ مُّنِيبٌ
> "Surely, Ibrāhīm is forbearing, very penitent, ever-turning to Allah."
Quran 11:75
But the matter had already been decided. The angels spoke the final word, and his pleading came to rest:
يَـٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ أَعْرِضْ عَنْ هَـٰذَآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ قَدْ جَآءَ أَمْرُ رَبِّكَ ۖ وَإِنَّهُمْ ءَاتِيهِمْ عَذَابٌ غَيْرُ مَرْدُودٍ
> "“O Ibrāhīm! Leave it. In fact, the command of your Lord has come to pass, and there has to come upon them a punishment that cannot be averted.”"
Quran 11:76

🌿 Stop and Think About This Scene
A roasted calf, prepared in haste and with love — and no hand reaches towards it. In a single moment, a host's joy turned into fear. Think of Ibrahim (علیہ السلام): he did not hide his feelings or turn his guests away. He watched them with care until the truth came out — and the strangers he feared turned out to be the bearers of the greatest news of his life. What troubles us at first sight is not always what it seems.

❤️ The Greatest Lesson
Nothing is too hard for Allah. An elderly husband and an elderly wife, long past the age of children, were promised a son — and not only a son, but a grandson after him, both to be prophets. The angels' question stands for every believer whose hope has grown old: "Do you marvel at Allah's command?" Allah's command is not bound by what our eyes call possible.

📚 Important Lessons From This Story
1. Begin with Salam. The guests greeted Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) with peace, and he answered with peace — a greeting that is also a prayer for safety.
2. Honour the guest without delay. Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) hurried to serve the best he had at hand — a roasted calf — and did not keep his visitors waiting.
3. Watch over your guests with care. He noticed their untouched food; a thoughtful host pays attention, quietly and with concern.
4. Do not marvel at Allah's power as if anything were beyond Him. Age, barrenness and every closed door stand under His command: He says "Be", and it is.
5. A tender heart pleads even for others. On receiving his own glad tidings, Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) turned to plead for the people of Lut.
6. Rest when Allah's decree is final. When he was told that his Lord's command had come, Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) submitted and left the matter to Allah.

🏠 How Can We Apply This in Our Daily Lives?
Greet people first with Salam, and return the greeting warmly. When a guest arrives, serve what you have readily and with honour — do not make them wait while you fuss. If some news shakes your heart, do not rush to fear: look carefully, ask, and let the truth appear. When Allah promises or decrees something that looks impossible to you, remember Sarah's amazement and the angels' answer. And keep a soft heart: pray for people who are far from Allah, just as Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) pleaded for a people he did not even live among — then leave the outcome to Allah.

🌹 The Most Beautiful Message
"Allah's mercy and His blessings have always been upon you, O people of the house." The home of Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) was a home of open doors, quick service, and trust in Allah — and so it became a home that angels visited with glad tidings. Open your door, serve with love, and trust your Lord with what looks impossible: mercy loves to enter such a house.

📖 What the Tafsir Says
Ma'ariful Quran, explaining this event at Quran 11:69, describes how completely Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) was taken in by his guests' human form:
> Since these angels had come in human form, Sayyidna Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) took them to be normal guests and lost no time in offering his hospitality. He placed a dish of roasted calf before them. But, they were really angels, free of eating and drinking. Therefore, despite the food being before them, they did not extend their hands towards it. When Sayyidna Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) noticed this, he was concerned.
Quran 11:69
Tafsir Ibn Kathir (Abridged), at Quran 11:74, sums up the turn of the story once the fear had gone:
> Allah, the Exalted, informs of what happened after the fright of Ibrahim left him and he felt no more fear of the angels when they refused to eat. After this, they gave him the glad tidings of the birth of a son and the destruction of the people of Lut.
