Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه at Khaybar — The Flag and the Advice Worth More Than Red Camels
Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه at Khaybar — The Flag and the Advice Worth More Than Red Camels
Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه at Khaybar — The Flag and the Advice Worth More Than Red Camels
The camp at Khaybar was astir, and hardly a man there could rest.
The Prophet ﷺ had already spoken the words that set every heart racing:
"I will give the flag to a person at whose hands Allah will grant victory."
Sahih al-Bukhari 2942
But he had not named the man.
So the camp waited — and hoped.
Every companion there wished that the hand chosen for the flag would be his.
What an honour it would be: to be the man through whom Allah granted victory.
So when the companions rose, it was with one shared longing:
"So, the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) got up, wishing eagerly to see to whom the flag will be given, and everyone of them wished to be given the flag."
Sahih al-Bukhari 2942

🌿 The Name Nobody Expected
The Prophet ﷺ did not call the strongest arm in the camp.
He asked for Ali رضي الله عنه.
"But the Prophet asked for `Ali. Someone informed him that he was suffering from eye-trouble."
Sahih al-Bukhari 2942
Ali's eyes were so sore that he was in no state to lead an army into battle.
But the Prophet ﷺ did not change his choice:
"So, he ordered them to bring `Ali in front of him. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) spat in his eyes and his eyes were cured immediately as if he had never any eye-trouble."
Sahih al-Bukhari 2942
Read those words slowly: "as if he had never any eye-trouble."
Not eased.
Not improved.
Cured — completely, on the spot, by the touch of the Prophet ﷺ.
The man who could barely see stood before the army with clear eyes, and the flag was his.

❤️ Ali's Zeal — and the Prophet's ﷺ Correction
Now listen to Ali رضي الله عنه in that moment.
His pain was gone, his strength was back, and his heart was burning with determination. Ali رضي الله عنه said:
"We will fight with them (i.e. infidels) till they become like us (i.e. Muslims)."
Sahih al-Bukhari 2942
This was zeal — sincere, brave, and ready for battle.
But the Prophet ﷺ gently corrected the order of the mission.
Before the sword, there would be an invitation.
Before fighting, there would be patience:
> «فَوَاللَّهِ لأَنْ يُهْدَى بِكَ رَجُلٌ وَاحِدٌ خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنْ حُمْرِ النَّعَمِ»
"Be patient, till you face them and invite them to Islam and inform them of what Allah has enjoined upon them. By Allah! If a single person embraces Islam at your hands (i.e. through you), that will be better for you than the red camels."
Sahih al-Bukhari 2942
What are "the red camels"?
For the Arabs of that time, red camels were the most prized and precious wealth a person could own — the greatest treasure of that world.
And the Prophet ﷺ told Ali رضي الله عنه: one person — just one — embracing Islam through you is worth more than all of it.

🌿 Stop and Think About This Scene
The flag was announced, and everyone wished for it.
But wishing did not decide anything.
The choice belonged to the Prophet ﷺ — and through him, to Allah.
And the man chosen was not the one who had hoped the loudest.
He was a man held back by pain, sitting out of sight with sore eyes — until he was called, cured, and sent.
And when he was sent, burning with zeal, he was not sent first to fight.
He was sent first to invite.

📚 Important Lessons From This Hadith
1. Honour is given by Allah, not grabbed by men
The companions wished eagerly — and there was no blame in their wishing.
But the flag went to the one the Prophet ﷺ called.
In our lives too, the doors of honour open by Allah's choice, not by our pushing.
2. Allah grants victory through whom He wills
The chosen man was suffering from eye-trouble that very day.
Weakness in our eyes is no barrier in Allah's plan.
When He wills victory through a person, He prepares that person Himself — even in a single moment.
3. Zeal must walk behind the Prophet's ﷺ order
Ali رضي الله عنه was ready to fight until the enemy became Muslim.
The Prophet ﷺ did not scold his zeal — he directed it: patience first, invitation first, information first.
Sincerity is precious, but it must follow the Sunnah's way, not run ahead of it.
4. One person guided is worth more than the world's greatest wealth
"If a single person embraces Islam at your hands (i.e. through you), that will be better for you than the red camels."
Sahih al-Bukhari 2942
One heart.
One person.
That is the scale of heaven — and it makes every small effort of dawah enormous.
5. The goal of dawah is hearts, not just victories
Victory at Khaybar was promised.
Yet the instruction given to the flag-bearer was about inviting people to Islam.
Winning land was never the mission's heart — winning people to Allah was.

🏠 How Can We Apply This Hadith in Our Daily Lives?
🤲 When you long for a role or an honour, wish for it — then leave the choosing to Allah. If it comes to another, know that Allah gives His tasks to whom He wills.
📖 When you share Islam — with a colleague, a neighbour, a friend — begin as Ali رضي الله عنه was told to begin: with patience, an invitation, and clear information about what Allah has enjoined. Not argument first. Not pressure first.
❤️ Never call your dawah small. One person who begins to pray because of your words, one heart that softens because of your character — the Prophet ﷺ has already told you its price: better than the red camels.
🔥 When your zeal runs hot — in religion, in family, in any good cause — ask before acting: what is the Prophet's ﷺ order here? Zeal that follows his way succeeds; zeal that outruns it can harm the very cause it loves.

🌹 The Most Beautiful Message of This Story
At Khaybar, an army waited eagerly for a name.
The name that came was Ali رضي الله عنه — a man whose eyes were in pain that day.
Allah healed him, honoured him, and sent him out — not with a command to crush, but with an invitation to carry.
And in that farewell advice, the Prophet ﷺ weighed the whole world's treasure against a single guided soul — and the soul weighed more.
> One person guided through you is better for you than the red camels.
