Impurities: Their Types, Rulings, and Methods of Purification

Physical and Legal Impurity

Actual Impurity (Najasah Haqiqiyyah): It is filth that a Muslim must avoid and must wash away if it comes into contact with him.

Ritual Impurity (Najasah Hukmiyyah): It refers to a state in which a person is not permitted to perform prayer. It is also referred to as Hadath (ritual impurity).

Hadath is divided into two types:

(A) Major Ritual Impurity (Hadath Akbar): It is a state in which a person is required to perform Ghusl (ritual bath), and prayer is not permitted in that state. Likewise, recitation of the Qur’an is not permitted in that state.

(B) Minor Ritual Impurity (Hadath Asghar): It is a state in which a person is required to perform Wudu (ablution). Prayer is not permitted in that state, but reciting the Qur’an orally is permitted.
