Excellence and mercy in slaughter
The Prophet (SAW) said: "Indeed, Allah has prescribed excellence (ihsan) in all things, so when you slaughter, slaughter well. Let one of you sharpen his blade and spare suffering to the animal he slaughters."
Reference: Sahih Muslim, on the authority of Shaddad ibn Aws (RA)
Explanation
Even in an act as final as slaughter, Islam commands minimizing the animal's suffering as far as possible.
