Sunnah of Duha Prayer in the Quran & Sunnah

سنة صلاة الضحى في ضوء القرآن والسنة

Etiquette of the Duha prayer in Islam (salat ad-duha): the forenoon prayer that pays the charity owed by every joint of the body, Allah’s promise to suffice the one who prays it, and the Prophet’s own bequest to his companions — from the authentic Sunnah.

1. Every joint of your body owes a charity each morning — two rak‘ahs of Duha pay them all.

“In the morning, charity is due on every joint of every one of you... and two rak‘ahs that one prays in the forenoon (Duha) suffice for all of that.” Three hundred and sixty joints are thanked with two rak‘ahs.

2. Allah promises: pray four for Me at the start of the day, and I will suffice you at its end.

Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: “O son of Adam! Pray four rak‘ahs for Me at the beginning of your day, and I shall suffice you at its end.” The day is insured at both ends by the One who owns it.

3. It was the Prophet’s personal bequest to his closest companions.

Abu Hurayrah said: “My close friend ﷺ advised me with three things: fasting three days of every month, the two rak‘ahs of Duha, and that I pray witr before sleeping” — and Abu Dharr and Abu Darda’ received the same counsel. Advice he gave his dearest is advice meant for us.

4. Its measure can grow — he prayed eight rak‘ahs of Duha on the day of victory.

On the day of the conquest of Makkah, Umm Hani’ saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray eight rak‘ahs of Duha, wrapped in a single garment. Two is the floor, never a ceiling.

5. Its choicest time is when the sun’s heat begins to be felt.

Zayd ibn Arqam saw some people praying the forenoon prayer early and said: they know well that prayer at another time than this is more excellent — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The prayer of the oft-returning (salat al-awwabin) is observed when the young camels feel the heat of the sun.” Duha runs from after sunrise until before Dhuhr, and its best time is as the morning advances.

6. Keep it daily, even if only two rak‘ahs.

Lesson: The bequest was to make Duha a daily companion like witr and the monthly fasts — a small, unbroken habit that greets every morning with gratitude before the day’s work begins.
