Etiquette of Trusts & Keeping Promises (Al-Amanah) in the Quran & Sunnah

Trusts and promises in Islam (al-amanah wa al-wafa bil-‘ahd): delivering every deposit, keeping every word, and betrayal of trust as a sign of hypocrisy, from the Quran and authentic Sunnah.

Part 1: Trusts in the Light of the Quran

1. Render the trusts to whom they are due.

Allah says:

Surely, Allah commands you to deliver trusts to those entitled to them, and that, when you judge between people, judge with justice. Surely, excellent is the exhortation Allah gives you. Surely, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing. (Surah An-Nisa 4:58)

The verse that commands delivering every trust also commands judging between people with justice — trustworthiness is named as the foundation of every dealing.

2. Do not betray Allah, His Messenger — or your trusts.

Allah says:

O you who believe, do not betray the trust of Allah and the Messenger-, and do not betray your mutual trusts, while you know. (Surah Al-Anfal 8:27)

Betrayal of a trust is placed in one line with betraying Allah and His Messenger, “while you know” — the one who knows the weight of what he holds is the one addressed.

3. The believers guard their trusts and their covenant.

Allah says:

- and (success is attained) by those who honestly look after their trusts and covenant, (Surah Al-Mu'minun 23:8)

In the portrait of the successful believers, guarding trusts and covenants stands between guarding chastity and guarding the prayers — the everyday deposit is an act of faith.

Part 2: Trustworthiness in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ

1. Betraying a trust is a sign of hypocrisy.

“The signs of a hypocrite are three: whenever he speaks, he lies; whenever he makes a promise, he breaks it; and whenever he is entrusted, he betrays the trust.”

Lesson: A misplaced deposit is not a business mishap in the Prophet’s ﷺ measure — it is a crack in iman itself.

2. Breaking a promise is a sign of hypocrisy.

The same narration counts the broken promise beside the lie and the betrayed trust — three doors into one house. The one who says “I will come” and does not come, without excuse, has spoken from that house.

Lesson: In the Sunnah, an appointment is a covenant; treat your word as something you have handed over for safekeeping.

3. Return the deposit — and do not betray the one who betrayed you.

“Pay the deposit to the one who deposited it with you, and do not betray the one who has betrayed you.”

Lesson: Trustworthiness is not reciprocal trade; the believer’s honesty is owed even to the dishonest.
