Abu Hurayrah: “O Allah, Set the Mother of Abu Huraira on the Right Path”

Abu Hurayrah: "O Allah, Set the Mother of Abu Huraira on the Right Path"

Abu Hurayrah: "O Allah, Set the Mother of Abu Huraira on the Right Path"

Abu Hurayrah loved his mother, and he longed for her to enter Islam. Day after day, he invited her — and day after day, she refused.

He tells the story himself. He used to invite his mother to Islam while she was still a polytheist:

"I invited her one day and she said to me something about Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) which I hated."

Sahih Muslim 2491

That day, the words broke his heart. He went to the Prophet ﷺ in tears:

"I came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) weeping and said: Allah's Messenger, I invited my mother to Islam but she did not accept (my invitation). I invited her today but she said to me something which I did not like. (Kindly) supplicate Allah that He may set the mother of Abu Huraira right."

Sahih Muslim 2491

He did not curse her. He did not give up on her. He carried her case to the one whose dua he trusted, and the Prophet ﷺ prayed for her on the spot:

"O Allah, set the mother of Abu Huraira on the right path."

Sahih Muslim 2491

> «اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِ أُمَّ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ»

Abu Hurayrah left with a heart full of hope:

"I came out quite pleased with the supplication of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and when I came near the door it was closed from within."

Sahih Muslim 2491

From behind the door, he heard something unexpected:

"My mother heard the noise of my footsteps and she said: Abu Huraira, just wait. And I heard the noise of falling of water. She took a bath and put on the shirt and quickly covered her head with a headdress and opened the door"

Sahih Muslim 2491

Then his mother spoke the words he had waited so long to hear:

"Abu Huraira, I bear witness to the fact that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His bondsman and His Messenger."

Sahih Muslim 2491

> «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ»

Abu Hurayrah ran back to the Prophet ﷺ — crying again, but this time with happiness:

"I went back to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and (this time) I was shedding the tears of joy. I said: Allah's Messenger, be happy, for Allah has responded to your supplication and He has set on the right path the mother of Abu Huraira."

Sahih Muslim 2491

The Prophet ﷺ praised Allah at the news. And Abu Hurayrah, whose first wish had just been granted, asked for one more thing — not wealth, not status, but love:

"Allah's Messenger, supplicate to Allah so that He may instill love of mine and that of my mother too in the believing servants and let our hearts be filled with their love"

Sahih Muslim 2491

So the Prophet ﷺ prayed again:

"O Allah, let there be love of these servants of yours, i.e. Abu Huraira and his mother, in the hearts of the believing servants and let their hearts be filled with the love of the believing servants."

Sahih Muslim 2491

And Abu Hurayrah ends his story by telling us how completely that prayer was answered — that ever since, no believer was born who heard of him or saw him without loving him.

🌿 Stop and Think About This Scene

Look at what Abu Hurayrah did with his pain. His mother had spoken words about the Prophet ﷺ that he hated — and his response was not anger at her, but tears in front of the Prophet ﷺ and a request for her guidance. He defended the Prophet ﷺ with dua for the very person who had hurt him. That is what love for the Messenger ﷺ and love for a mother look like when they live in one heart.

❤️ The Greatest Lesson

Never stop making dua for the guidance of the people you love. Abu Hurayrah invited his mother again and again, and when his own words reached their limit, he went to the Prophet ﷺ and asked for his dua — and Allah answered it the same day. Human effort has a limit; dua does not.

📚 Important Lessons From This Hadith

1. Abu Hurayrah kept inviting his mother to Islam patiently, even though "she did not accept (my invitation)".
2. When her words hurt him, he turned to the Prophet ﷺ weeping — and asked for her guidance, not against her.
3. The Prophet ﷺ made dua for her immediately: "O Allah, set the mother of Abu Huraira on the right path."
4. Allah answered that dua — Abu Hurayrah came home to find his mother ready to say the shahada at the door.
5. Abu Hurayrah's second request was for love between his family and the believers — after guidance, he valued the hearts of the believers most.

🏠 How Can We Apply This Hadith in Our Daily Lives?

Many of us have someone whose guidance we long for — a parent, a child, a friend. Abu Hurayrah's way is our way: keep inviting with kindness, never answer harsh words with harshness, and pour the matter out in dua, especially in the moments when our own words have failed. And when Allah grants us a wish, let us do what Abu Hurayrah did: run back with gratitude, praise Allah, and ask Him for the next good thing — love between us and the believers.

🌹 The Most Beautiful Message

One son went to the Prophet ﷺ crying because of his mother, and came back crying because of her — the first tears of pain, the second of joy. Between those two journeys stands a single dua: "O Allah, set the mother of Abu Huraira on the right path." Whoever you are praying for tonight, do not stop. The door that was closed from within may open sooner than you think.
