Sa'd ibn Ubadah: "My Mother Died in My Absence"

Sa'd ibn Ubadah: "My Mother Died in My Absence"

Sa'd ibn Ubadah was away from home when his mother died — and he had not been there.

Ibn 'Abbas tells us what happened:

"The mother of Sa`d bin 'Ubada died in his absence."

Sahih al-Bukhari 2756

Sa'd could not undo his absence. But one door was still open, and he went straight to the Prophet ﷺ to ask about it:

"O Allah's Messenger! My mother died in my absence; will it be of any benefit for her if I give Sadaqa on her behalf?"

Sahih al-Bukhari 2756

> «أَيَنْفَعُهَا شَىْءٌ إِنْ تَصَدَّقْتُ بِهِ عَنْهَا»

The Prophet ﷺ answered with a single word:

"The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Yes,""

Sahih al-Bukhari 2756

And Sa'd did not delay. He made the Prophet ﷺ his witness and gave away a garden, known by its own name:

"Sa`d said, "I make you a witness that I gave my garden called Al Makhraf in charity on her behalf.""

Sahih al-Bukhari 2756

> «حَائِطِي الْمِخْرَافَ صَدَقَةٌ عَلَيْهَا»

A whole garden, given away for a mother who would never walk in it — because her son believed the Prophet's ﷺ "Yes."

🌿 Stop and Think About This Scene

Notice Sa'd's question — he asked about her: "will it be of any benefit for her if I give Sadaqa on her behalf?" His love did not end at her grave; it looked for a way to keep reaching her. And he asked before he gave.

❤️ The Greatest Lesson

Asked whether charity on behalf of a mother who had died would benefit her, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Yes." Her own days of giving had ended, but a child's service does not have to end at the grave — a son or daughter can still give charity for her, and the Prophet ﷺ confirmed that it would benefit her.

📚 Important Lessons From This Hadith

1. Sa'd's first thought after his mother's death was her benefit: "will it be of any benefit for her if I give Sadaqa on her behalf?"
2. He asked the Prophet ﷺ before acting, and the answer was clear: "Yes."
3. He acted at once — he did not postpone his mother's charity.
4. He gave something valuable: "my garden called Al Makhraf" — not leftovers, but real property.
5. He made the Prophet ﷺ a witness to the gift — charity settled openly and firmly.

🏠 How Can We Apply This Hadith in Our Daily Lives?

If a parent has passed away, this hadith gives us something to do today: give charity on their behalf — feed someone, help a student, contribute to a well or a masjid — and intend it for them. We do not need to own a garden; the lesson is in the asking, the believing, and the not delaying. And for parents still alive: serve them now, before absence makes you wish you had.

🌹 The Most Beautiful Message

A mother left this world while her son was far away — and still his love found a road to her. One word — "Yes" — turned his grief into a garden given in her name. Our parents' graves are not the end of our duty: as long as we can give, we can still serve them.
