Aisha رضي الله عنها — The Little Horse With Two Wings
Aisha رضي الله عنها — The Little Horse With Two Wings
Aisha رضي الله عنها — The Little Horse With Two Wings
A gust of wind caught the curtain first.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had come home. The journey was behind him — and just then, a draught of air slipped through the house and lifted the edge of a curtain hanging in front of a small store-room.
Behind that curtain stood a whole little kingdom, suddenly revealed: the dolls of Aisha رضي الله عنها.
This is how she herself told it:
"When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) arrived after the expedition to Tabuk or Khaybar (the narrator is doubtful), the draught raised an end of a curtain which was hung in front of her store-room, revealing some dolls which belonged to her." Sunan Abu Dawud 4932
The narrator who passed this story down was not even certain which expedition he had returned from, and said so honestly. What nobody doubted was the scene that followed.
The Prophet ﷺ could have walked past the curtain and its small secret. He did not. He stopped, looked at the row of dolls, and asked about them — the way you ask about something that matters to the person who owns it:
"He asked: What is this? She replied: My dolls." Sunan Abu Dawud 4932
Then his eye fell on one figure among them — a figure that did not belong in any stable on earth:
"Among them he saw a horse with wings made of rags, and asked: What is this I see among them?" Sunan Abu Dawud 4932
"She replied: A horse." Sunan Abu Dawud 4932
He kept asking, gently, one question at a time, entering further into her small world:
"He asked: What is this that it has on it? She replied: Two wings." Sunan Abu Dawud 4932
And then came the question that carried a smile inside it:
"He asked: A horse with two wings?" Sunan Abu Dawud 4932
Most children, questioned about an impossible horse, would shrink. Aisha رضي الله عنها answered like a spark catching light — reaching into the stories she had heard, she produced, in one breath, a whole argument:
"She replied: Have you not heard that Solomon had horses with wings?" Sunan Abu Dawud 4932
If Solomon could have horses with wings — why not hers?
And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — who carried the affairs of a whole community on his shoulders — heard this answer from a child standing among her dolls, and laughed.
"Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) laughed so heartily that I could see his molar teeth." Sunan Abu Dawud 4932
She remembered that laughter for the rest of her life. When she later told this story, the detail she kept was not the curtain, not the dolls — it was how heartily he laughed.
And this was not a single afternoon of kindness. In another narration, Aisha رضي الله عنها describes what that home was like, day after day:
"I used to play with the dolls in the presence of the Prophet, and my girl friends also used to play with me." Sahih al-Bukhari 6130
Her little friends would come, and the games would fill the room. But little girls are shy before greatness, and when the Prophet ﷺ entered, the game would break apart:
"When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to enter (my dwelling place) they used to hide themselves, but the Prophet would call them to join and play with me." Sahih al-Bukhari 6130
They hid — and he sent for them.
He would not let his arrival be the thing that ended the children's joy. He called the shy ones back, and the game went on — with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the house.

🌿 Stop and Think About This Scene
Picture the moment the wind lifts the curtain.
On one side stands a man returning from a journey of hardship, a leader whose days were filled with the needs of an entire community.
On the other side stands a child, caught by surprise, her dolls lined up where she thought nobody would see them.
He could have looked away. He could have walked on. Nothing required him to stop.
Instead, he asked four questions about a row of rag dolls — and every question was a door he opened into her world, instead of pulling her out of it into his.

❤️ The Greatest Lesson for Our Lives Today
The heart of this story is not the dolls. It is the laughter.
A child gave him a playful, impossible answer — and instead of correcting her, flattening her, or turning it into a lecture, he received it with pure delight.
Children remember such moments forever. Aisha رضي الله عنها carried that laughter in her memory for the whole of her long life, and passed it to us as one of her treasures.

📚 Important Lessons From This Story
1. Greatness stoops down to a child's world
He did not summon her out of her play into adult seriousness. He came down to where she was, and asked about the dolls one by one.
The biggest people are the ones who can become small enough to enter a child's world without breaking it.
---
2. A child's quick answer is honoured, not crushed
Her reply about the horses of Solomon was ready, bright and bold — and it was met with laughter, not with a frown.
Children learn confidence when their words are received with joy. A child whose cleverness is delighted in will keep speaking — and keep growing.
---
3. Do not let your arrival scatter joy
When he entered the room, her friends hid themselves. His response was to call them back to the game.
Let your presence in a home be the kind that children run toward — not the kind that makes the laughter stop at the door.
---
4. Laughter in the home is Prophetic too
He laughed so heartily that his molar teeth could be seen — in his own house, over a child's winged horse made of rags.
Warmth is not a distraction from the Sunnah of a household. It is part of it. A home where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed is a home that teaches us how our homes should feel.

🏠 How Can We Apply This Story in Our Daily Lives?
👨👩👧 With Our Children
When a child shows you something small — a drawing, a toy, a strange invention of sticks and cloth — do not wave it away. Stop. Ask about it. Ask the second question, and the third. You are not wasting time; you are entering the world your child lives in.
🧒 When a Child Answers Cleverly
Delight in it before you correct anything. Let the child's face see your joy first. Correction has its place, but a child who is laughed with will listen far more than a child who is only lectured.
🚪 When You Enter a Room
Notice whether the happiness in the room hides when you arrive. If it does, do what he ﷺ did: call it back. Invite the shy ones in. Be the reason the game continues, not the reason it ends.
😄 In Our Homes Generally
Make room for laughter — real, hearty laughter, shared across generations. It is not a weakness in a religious home. In the home of the Prophet ﷺ, it was a sound a child remembered all her life.

🌹 The Most Beautiful Message of This Story
A curtain lifted for one moment, and it showed us the inside of the most blessed home on earth.
And what was inside?
A little horse made of rags, with two wings it could never fly with — and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, laughing until his molar teeth showed, because a child he loved had answered him with a joyful, shining wit.
The wind that raised that curtain did the whole world a favour.
