Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه — The Dua That Blessed a Lifetime
Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه — The Dua That Blessed a Lifetime
Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه — The Dua That Blessed a Lifetime
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was a guest in a mother's home.
He had prayed in her house and blessed her whole family. She had received more in one visit than most receive in a lifetime.
And still she had one more thing to ask. Just one.
She said: "O Allah's Messenger! I have a special request (today)." Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
He ﷺ asked her: "What is it?" Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
She did not ask for herself — she pointed to her young son, the Prophet's ﷺ servant: "(Please invoke for) your servant Anas." Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
One request — not for her, but a prayer for her boy.
How had that moment come? Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه narrates the visit himself: "The Prophet (ﷺ) paid a visit to Um-Sulaim and she placed before him dates and ghee." Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
Dates and ghee — a host honouring her guest. But the guest was fasting: "Replace the ghee and dates in their respective containers for I am fasting." Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
The food went back untouched — but a visit from the Prophet ﷺ is never empty: "Then he stood somewhere in her house and offered an optional prayer and then he invoked good on Um-Sulaim and her family." Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
And look at how the Prophet ﷺ answered her request: "So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) did not leave anything good in the world or the Hereafter which he did not invoke (Allah to bestow) on me" Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
Not one good thing was left out, of this world or the next — and within that prayer he said:
> «اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْهُ مَالاً وَوَلَدًا وَبَارِكْ لَهُ»
"O Allah! Give him (i.e. Anas) property and children and bless him." Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
Then the years passed, and the prayer answered itself. Looking back, Anas رضي الله عنه testified: "Thus I am one of the richest among the Ansar" Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
And he added a detail that measures the length of that life: "my daughter Umaina told me that when Al-Hajjaj came to Basra, more than 120 of my offspring had been buried." Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
A man does not bury a hundred and twenty of his own offspring unless Allah has given him both a very large family and a very long life. The wealth came. The children came. The years came too.
The dua comes in a second narration too, in its own words — his mother said: "O Allah's Messenger! Please invoke Allah on behalf of your servant." Sahih al-Bukhari 6344
And the Prophet ﷺ answered: "O Allah! Increase his wealth and children, and bestow Your Blessing on whatever You give him." Sahih al-Bukhari 6344
Wealth. Children. And above both — blessing on whatever Allah gives.

🌿 Stop and Think About This Scene
Think about what this mother did with one request.
The Prophet ﷺ was in her house. If she had asked for something for herself, who could have blamed her?
Instead, she carried her child to the door of that prayer. She understood: the greatest gift a parent can give is not always something you can hold. Sometimes it is a dua that follows the child for the rest of his life.
And the one asked did not give a quick, passing prayer. Anas رضي الله عنه remembered it decades later: his Messenger ﷺ "did not leave anything good in the world or the Hereafter which he did not invoke (Allah to bestow) on me" Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
A servant boy asked for nothing. His mother asked for one thing. The Prophet ﷺ gave him everything.

❤️ The Greatest Lesson for Our Lives Today
The heart of this dua is not the wealth, nor even the children.
It is the blessing wrapped around them both: "and bless him." Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
Wealth without blessing slips through the fingers; when Allah blesses what He gives, a little becomes much.
That is why the second narration ends with: "bestow Your Blessing on whatever You give him." Sahih al-Bukhari 6344
Whatever You give — little or much — bless it.

📚 Important Lessons From This Hadith
1. Parents carry their children to the doors of prayer
Umm Sulaym رضي الله عنها had one special request, and she spent it on her son: "(Please invoke for) your servant Anas." Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
A parent's dua is among the most precious gifts a child will ever receive — do not let your children grow up unmentioned in yours.
---
2. The Prophet ﷺ was generous even in his dua
He ﷺ did not ration his prayer for a young servant — he "did not leave anything good in the world or the Hereafter" Sahih al-Bukhari 1982 unasked for him.
When someone asks for your dua, pray fully. Such a gift costs nothing and may change a life.
---
3. Ask for blessing, not only for more
The dua joined three things together: property, children — "and bless him." Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
Quantity answers how much; barakah answers how good. Ask for both.
---
4. Some prayers take a whole lifetime to unfold
Anas رضي الله عنه could point to the answer with his own eyes: "Thus I am one of the richest among the Ansar" Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
But that testimony came after decades, and more than a hundred and twenty funerals of his own offspring. Do not declare a dua unanswered too early — some answers are still growing.
---
5. The guest of honour blesses the whole house
Before the special request was ever made, the Prophet ﷺ prayed in that house, "and then he invoked good on Um-Sulaim and her family." Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
A righteous guest is a mercy to a home — honour such guests, for their dua may bless generations you will never see.

🌹 The Most Beautiful Message of This Story
A boy serving in a house in Madinah. A mother with one request. A Prophet ﷺ who, asked for a small prayer, gave a boy both worlds.
And then a long life — wealth among the Ansar, a family beyond counting — all beginning with a mother's request and the Prophet's ﷺ dua.
> "O Allah! Give him (i.e. Anas) property and children and bless him." Sahih al-Bukhari 1982
May Allah bless our children as He blessed Anas رضي الله عنه: provision, family, long years of obedience — and above all, His blessing on whatever He gives.
