Al-Warith
The Inheritor
What Al-Warith Means
Al-Warith is the Inheritor: the One to whom everything returns when its temporary owners are gone. A human heir inherits because the owner died; Allah is called Al-Warith because all owners will die and He never will — every house, field, throne and treasure ends up back in His sole possession, as it began. The Quran uses the name three times with this weight: after the promise ‘We give life and We give death’ comes ‘and We are the Inheritors’ (15:23); after towns that revelled in luxury were destroyed and their homes left empty comes ‘and We were the Inheritors’ (28:58). The name also carries tenderness: the elderly Zakariya, childless and afraid of being left alone, prayed to Allah addressing Him as ‘the best of inheritors (Khayr al-Warithin)’ (21:89) — the One who remains when a man has no one. For the believer, Al-Warith teaches him to hold property as a trust and write his will justly.
Al-Warith in the Quran
“It is indeed We, and only We, who give life and bring death, and We are the ultimate inheritor (of everything).”
“And (remember) Zakariyyā when he called his Lord, “My Lord, do not leave me alone and You are the best of inheritors.””
“And how many a town have We destroyed that were over-proud of their means of living. Now, those are their habitations, which were never inhabited after them except a few, and We alone were the inheritors.”
What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us
THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES
“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”
Calling Upon Allah by This Name
Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:
“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
When you fear being left alone, pray as Zakariya prayed, addressing Allah with this very name: ‘Rabbi la tadharni fardan wa-Anta Khayru al-Warithin — my Lord, do not leave me alone, and You are the best of inheritors’ (21:89). And in your own words: ‘Ya Warith, make me a faithful trustee of what will return to You’ Use it when settling inheritance or grieving an empty house. Its lesson: deal justly with what others leave behind — and fear no abandonment, for He remains.
