Al-Ahad
The Unique, The One
What Al-Ahad Means
Al-Ahad appears in the Quran only once as a name of Allah, in the first verse of the surah of sincerity: ‘Say: He is Allah, Ahad — the Unique One’ (112:1). In Arabic, Ahad is used for the one who is one in such a complete way that nothing can be counted alongside him; applied to Allah it means He is One in His essence, His attributes and His actions, without partner, peer or likeness. This short surah carries enormous weight: the Prophet (saw) said it equals one-third of the Quran (Al-Bukhari 7374). Scholars explain that this is because the Quran’s themes return to Allah Himself — who He is, His names and His attributes — and this surah gathers that knowledge in its purest form, free of every mixture.
Al-Ahad in the Quran
قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ
“Say, “The truth is that Allah is One.”
What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us
THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES
“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”
“Narrated Buraydah ibn al-Hasib: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) heard a man saying: O Allah, I ask Thee, I bear witness that there is no god but Thou, the One, He to Whom men repair, Who has not begotten, and has not been begotten, and to Whom no one is equal, and he said: You have supplicated Allah…”
“Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: A man heard another man reciting (in the prayers): ‘Say (O Muhammad): “He is Allah, the One.” (112.1) And he recited it repeatedly.”
Calling Upon Allah by This Name
Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:
وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ فَٱدْعُوهُ بِهَا ۖ وَذَرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ يُلْحِدُونَ فِىٓ أَسْمَـٰٓئِهِۦ ۚ سَيُجْزَوْنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
A man once prayed using exactly this name — ‘I bear witness that You are Allah; there is no god but You, Al-Ahad, As-Samad, who begets not nor was begotten’ — and the Prophet (saw) said he had asked Allah by His Greatest Name, which, when He is called by it, He answers (Abu Dawud 1493, Sahih). So present your needs in the same prophetic pattern, confident that the Unique One, whom nothing resembles, hears His servant.
