الْوَكِيلُ

Al-Wakil

The Trustee

What Al-Wakil Means

Al-Wakil is from the root w-k-l, to entrust an affair to someone who will manage it fully. Allah is Al-Wakil: the Trustee to whom the believer hands over his affair, confident that it is managed better than he could manage it himself. When the companions were threatened with a gathered army, their answer was the name itself: “Hasbunallah wa ni’ma al-Wakil” (3:173) — and it increased them in faith. The Prophet ﷺ was commanded personally: “Trust in Allah; Allah suffices as Wakil” (33:3), and every worshipper is invited: “Take Him as Wakil” (73:9). Scholars explain that tawakkul is not abandoning effort: you tie your camel, take your means, and then rest the outcome on Al-Wakil. For the believer, this name is the cure for the anxiety of carrying every outcome alone.

Al-Wakil and Al-Waliyy — what is the difference?

Scholars explain the two names by their angles. Al-Wakil looks at the affair you hand over: He is the Trustee who disposes of your matters when you entrust them to Him (3:173). Al-Waliyy looks at His nearness to you: He is the protecting Friend who takes charge of His servants, loves them and brings them into the light (2:257). In Al-Wakil the stress falls on your trust; in Al-Waliyy, on His guardianship and love.

Al-Wakil in the Quran

“- (that is) those to whom people said, “The people have gathered against you; so, fear them.” It increased them in Faith and they said, “Allah is fully sufficient for us, and the best One in whom to trust.””

Calling Upon Allah by This Name

Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:

وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ فَٱدْعُوهُ بِهَا ۖ وَذَرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ يُلْحِدُونَ فِىٓ أَسْمَـٰٓئِهِۦ ۚ سَيُجْزَوْنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ

“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”

Surah Al-A’raf — 7:180Read in the Quran →

Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so call upon Him as Ya Wakil — for example, in your own words: “Ya Wakil, I hand over my affair to You; manage it for me as You managed the affairs of those who trusted You before me.” The practical lesson is the companions’ reflex: when fear arrives — an army then; an exam, illness or debt now — the first sentence is “Hasbunallah wa ni’ma al-Wakil” (3:173), the words of Ibrahim and the Prophet ﷺ (Bukhari 4563).
