Etiquette of Dua (Supplication) in the Quran & Sunnah
Etiquette of Dua (Supplication) in the Quran & Sunnah
Etiquette of dua in Islam (adab ad-du‘a): calling on Allah with humility and certainty, beginning with His praise and blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, raising the hands, choosing the blessed times, and avoiding the things that block an answer — from the Quran and authentic Sunnah.
Part 1: Dua in the Light of the Quran
1. Call on Allah — He has promised to respond.
Allah says:
Your Lord has said, “Call Me, I will respond to you. Definitely those who show arrogance against worshipping Me shall enter Jahannam (Hell) with disgrace. (Surah Ghafir 40:60)
Lesson: Dua is not a hopeless wish; Allah Himself invites it and promises the answer, and He counts turning away from it as arrogance.
2. Remember that Allah is near — nearer than you imagine.
Allah says:
When My servants ask you about Me, then (tell them that) I am near. I respond to the call of one when he prays to Me; so they should respond to Me, and have faith in Me, so that they may be on the right path. (Surah al-Baqarah 2:186)
Lesson: The supplicant does not shout to a distant Lord; Allah is close, and He answers the call of everyone who calls.
3. Call on your Lord in humility and in private — and do not transgress.
Allah says:
Supplicate to your Lord humbly and secretly. Surely, He does not like those who cross the limits. (Surah al-A'raf 7:55)
Lesson: The Quran’s own etiquette of dua: a humble heart, a lowered voice, and no excess or aggression in what is asked.
4. Call upon Him by His Most Beautiful Names.
Allah says:
For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing. (Surah al-A'raf 7:180)
Lesson: Begin and fill your dua with the Names of Allah that fit your need — the Merciful for mercy, the Provider for provision, the Forgiving for pardon.
Part 2: Dua in the Light of the Sunnah
1. Know what dua really is: it is worship itself.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Dua is worship,” then he recited: “Your Lord says: Call upon Me, I will respond to you.” (40:60)
2. Begin with the praise of Allah, then blessings on the Prophet ﷺ — then ask.
He heard a man who rushed into asking without glorifying Allah or sending blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, and he taught the order: let one of you, when he prays, begin by praising his Lord and glorifying Him, then send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, then ask for whatever he wishes.
3. Raise your hands — Allah is too shy and too generous to turn them back empty.
“Your Lord is Modest and Generous; He is shy, when His servant raises his hands to Him, to return them empty and disappointed.”
4. Ask with firm resolve — never say “if You will.”
“When one of you supplicates, let him not say: O Allah, forgive me if You will. Rather, let him be firm in his asking, for no one can compel Allah.”
5. Do not be hasty and say, “I asked and I was not answered.”
The servant is answered so long as he does not ask for sin or the cutting of ties, and so long as he does not become hasty — “I supplicated and supplicated, and I was not answered,” and then he gives up.
6. Do not transgress in dua — no shouting, no forced rhymes, no asking for wrong.
The Prophet ﷺ warned that a people would come who transgress in purification and in dua; the etiquette is a present heart with simple, sincere words.
7. Keep your food, drink and earnings halal — they decide whether dua is answered.
He mentioned the man on a long journey, dusty and dishevelled, raising his hands: “O Lord! O Lord!” — while his food is haram, his drink is haram and he is nourished with haram: “So how can he be answered?” Allah is Pure and accepts only what is pure.
8. Use the time between the adhan and the iqamah — dua then is not rejected.
“The supplication between the adhan and the iqamah is not rejected.”
9. Rise in the last third of the night and ask.
Our Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven in the last third of the night and says: “Who is calling upon Me, that I may answer him? Who is asking of Me, that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness, that I may forgive him?”
10. When the need is great, raise your hands high, as he did.
In earnest supplication the Prophet ﷺ raised his hands until the whiteness of his underarms could be seen — dua is asking with the whole body, not only the tongue.
11. Three people whose dua you must never take lightly: the fasting person, the just ruler and the oppressed.
“Three supplications are not rejected: the supplication of the fasting person when he breaks his fast, the just leader, and the supplication of the oppressed.” Never wrong anyone — the oppressed person’s dua rises above the clouds.
12. Pray for your brother in his absence — an angel prays the same for you.
The dua of a Muslim for his brother in his absence is answered; at his head is an appointed angel: whenever he prays for good for his brother, the angel says, “Amin — and for you the same.”
13. Never pray against yourself, your children or your wealth.
“Do not supplicate against yourselves, do not supplicate against your children, and do not supplicate against your wealth — lest it coincide with an hour in which Allah is asked for a gift and He grants it to you.”
14. On Laylat al-Qadr, ask with the words he taught ‘Aishah.
Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul-‘afwa fa‘fu ‘anni — O Allah, You are Pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon me.
15. If you wake in the night, say the words — then ask, and you will be answered.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever wakes at night and says: ‘La ilaha illallah, wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadir; alhamdulillah, wa subhanallah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah’ — then says: ‘O Allah, forgive me’, or makes any dua — he will be answered. And if he performs wudu and prays, his prayer will be accepted.”
16. Inside the prayer itself, use the dua he taught Abu Bakr.
Allahumma inni zalamtu nafsi zulman kathiran, wa la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa anta, faghfir li maghfiratan min ‘indika, warhamni, innaka antal-ghafurur-rahim — O Allah, I have wronged myself with much wrongdoing, and none forgives sins but You; so grant me forgiveness from Yourself and have mercy on me — You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful. Abu Bakr asked the Prophet ﷺ for a dua to say in his prayer, and he taught him this.
