Using Tissue Immediately after Urinating
Using Tissue Immediately after Urinating
After being certain that urination has finished, the urine should first be dried using clean lumps of clay or toilet tissue, and then the area should be washed with water. Likewise, after defecation, the area should first be cleaned with three lumps of clay or toilet tissue and then washed with water.
To ensure that no further drops of urine remain, one may clear the throat, apply pressure to the foot, or stand and walk one or two steps. Under normal circumstances, when the urine drops have not spread beyond their place, it is preferable and better to use toilet tissue for istinja and then wash with water. If the drops spread somewhat, then washing with water after using tissue is necessary.
However, using tissue is not obligatory; washing with water alone is sufficient. Nevertheless, the area must be washed only after the urine drops have stopped.
It is stated in Minhaj al-Sunan, a commentary on Jami‘ al-Sunan of al-Tirmidhi:
“I say: As for the paper specifically prepared for this purpose in our time, there is no dislike in using it for istinja, because after it has been cut, it has no value, and it is not intended for writing. Understand this.
And in Sharh al-Naqayah, some scholars have formulated the principle very well, saying: It is permissible to perform istinja with every solid, pure substance that cleans and removes the trace of impurity, does not cause harm, is not something possessing sanctity or honor, and is not connected to the right of another person.”
