Entering the Toilet with a Phone or Quran App

دخول الخلاء بالهاتف أو تطبيق القرآن

Downloading the Holy Qur’an onto a mobile phone and reciting the Qur’an from the mobile phone are both permissible. However, when the Qur’an is open on the mobile screen, it is necessary to be in a state of wudu to touch it. Other parts of the mobile phone, apart from the screen, may be touched without wudu.

If a page of the Holy Qur’an or its Tafsir is open on the mobile screen, or Qur’an recitation is playing, it is not permissible to take the phone into the toilet. Otherwise, there is room for doing so, although it is contrary to what is preferable. Similarly, if a Qur’anic verse is written in a diary, the same ruling applies. Therefore, even if such a diary is closed, it is more respectful and preferable to leave it in a safe place outside the toilet before entering.

As for mobile phones and other devices, listening to music or musical entertainment through them is not permissible. Therefore, refraining from reciting the Holy Qur’an on a mobile phone merely because music is also listened to on it is not wise. Rather, such devices should simply not be used for anything impermissible.
