Malik-ul-Mulk
Owner of All Sovereignty
What Malik-ul-Mulk Means
Malik-ul-Mulk means that every kingdom, government and possession in existence belongs to Allah alone, and He hands its reins to whomever He wills. The name appears once in the Quran, in Surah Aal-e-Imran (3:26), where Allah Himself teaches His Prophet (peace be upon him) to declare it: ‘You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will; You honour whom You will and You humble whom You will; in Your Hand is all good.’ Earthly power is only a temporary trust: the hand that raised a ruler can lower him. For the believer, this name cuts the roots of envy and despair. He does not beg kings, employers or officials as though they owned his future; he asks the Owner of all sovereignty, and he holds his own small authority — in a home, a business, a community — with humility, knowing it will one day be taken back.
Malik-ul-Mulk in the Quran
“Say: “O Allah, O Lord of the Kingdom, You give kingdom to whom You will, and take kingdom away from whom You will; and You bestow honor on whom You will, and bring disgrace to whom You will. In your hand lies the betterment (of everyone). You are surely powerful over everything.”
What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us
THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES
“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”
Calling Upon Allah by This Name
Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:
“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
Uniquely, this name comes to us inside a supplication Allah Himself composed in the Quran (3:26), so you may call on Him with those very revealed words: ‘Allahumma Malika al-Mulk — O Allah, Owner of sovereignty, You give rule to whom You will and take it from whom You will; in Your Hand is all good.’ Say ‘Ya Malik al-Mulk’ when the decisions of powerful people weigh on your heart. The lesson of the name is contentment: honour and humiliation are both from His hand alone.
