Ar-Raouf
The Most Kind
What Ar-Raouf Means
Ar-Raouf is built on the root ra-hamza-fa, ra’fah: an intense, tender pity that moves the one who feels it to shield others from harm before it reaches them. Again and again the Quran seals a verse with the words ‘Allah is Ra’uf, Rahim’ towards mankind. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:143) it follows Allah’s promise that He would never let the believers’ earlier prayers go to waste — His kindness notices even the faith people feared was lost. In Surah Al-Hajj (22:65) it follows His holding the sky from falling upon the earth: a vast, unseen protection no one thanks Him for. Scholars explain that ra’fah is among the most intense forms of mercy, a kindness that reaches a person in his smallest needs. For the believer, Ar-Raouf means that Allah’s care is not distant or general; it is gentle, personal, and already surrounding him in dangers he never even perceived.
Ar-Raouf in the Quran
“In the same way We made you a moderate Ummah (community), so that you should be witnesses over the people, and the Messenger a witness to you.And We did not prescribe the Qiblah which you used to observe except to know the one who follows the Messenger as distinct from the one who turns on his heels. It was burdensome indeed, but not on those whom Allah guided. Allah will not allow your faith go to waste. Certainly Allah is very kind, very merciful to the people.”
“Did you not see that Allah has subjugated to you everything on the earth, and the ships that sail at sea with His command? And He holds the sky so as it cannot fall on the earth except with His permission. Surely Allah is Very-Kind to the people, Very-Merciful.”
“Had it not been for the grace of Allah upon you, and His mercy, and that Allah is Very-Kind, Very-Merciful (you would have been destroyed).”
What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us
THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES
“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”
Calling Upon Allah by This Name
Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:
“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
Call on Him by this name: ‘Ya Raouf — O Most Kind — be gentle with me in what You have decreed, and shield me from harms I cannot see.’ Allah says He is Ra’uf towards people even as He holds the sky above them (22:65), so ask Him to surround you with that same unseen kindness in every hardship. And take the practical lesson from the name: be soft and protective towards those weaker than you, for the Most Kind loves kindness in His servants.
