Al-Muhyi
The Giver of Life
What Al-Muhyi Means
Al-Muhyi is from the root h-y-y, life itself. Allah is Al-Muhyi, the Giver of Life: He gave life to what had none, and He will give life to the dead when He wills. The Quran makes the proof visible under our feet: look at the traces of His mercy, “how He revives the earth after its death — indeed that is the Reviver of the dead (la-Muhyi al-Mawta)” (30:50). A dead valley green after rain is a standing argument for the resurrection: “The One who revived it is the Reviver of the dead” (41:39). And Al-Hajj states it as doctrine: “He gives life to the dead, and He is over all things powerful” (22:6). For the believer, this name is not only about the Last Day: every dawn, the Prophet ﷺ thanked the One “who gave us life after He caused us to die” (Bukhari 1154) — life is received fresh, daily, from Al-Muhyi.
Al-Muhyi in the Quran
“So, look to the effects of Allah’s mercy, how He gives life to the earth after its death. Surely, That (Allah) is the One who will give life to the dead; and He has the power to do everything.”
“And among His signs is that you see the land inactive; then, once We send down water thereto, it gets excited and swells. Surely, the One who has given life to it is the One who gives life to the dead. No doubt, He is powerful to do everything.”
“That is because Allah is the truth, and that He gives life to the dead, and that He is powerful to do everything,”
What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us
THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES
“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”
“Narrated ‘Ubada bin As-Samit: The Prophet (ﷺ) “Whoever gets up at night and says: — ‘La ilaha il-lallah Wahdahu la Sharika lahu Lahu-lmulk, waLahu-l-hamd wahuwa ‘ala kullishai’in Qadir.”
Calling Upon Allah by This Name
Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:
“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so call upon Him as Ya Muhyi — for example, in your own words: “Ya Muhyi, revive my heart with Your remembrance as You revive the dead earth with rain, and give me life in both worlds.” The practical lesson is to start the day the Prophet’s way: his first words on waking thanked Al-Muhyi for a life handed back (Bukhari 1154). Treat each morning as a fresh grant of life, and its hours will be spent differently.
