Al-Mughni

The Enricher

What Al-Mughni Means

Al-Mughni is the Enricher: the One who takes a person in need and makes him sufficient. The Quran expresses this through His action rather than the noun itself: ‘He is the One who enriches and grants wealth’ (53:48), and, reminding His Prophet (peace be upon him) of his own orphaned, poor childhood, ‘He found you poor and enriched you’ (93:8). Enrichment here is wider than money. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught a man crushed by debt to say, ‘O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful in place of Your unlawful, and enrich me by Your grace so that I need no one besides You,’ promising that even a debt like a mountain would be cleared (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3563, Hasan). For the believer, Al-Mughni is the name to hold onto in financial fear: provision is a person to turn to, not a sum to despair over, and the door to it is lawful earning joined with this supplication.

Al-Ghani and Al-Mughni — what is the difference?

Scholars explain the pair as a state and its action. Al-Ghani describes Allah Himself: He is free of all need, and our giving or withholding changes nothing for Him. Al-Mughni describes what He does for others: He takes the needy person and makes him ghaniyy — sufficient, free of need of people. So: because Allah is Al-Ghani, the believer asks Him alone; and he asks Him as Al-Mughni, the One who turns poverty into sufficiency, as He did for His own Prophet (93:8).

What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us

THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES

“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 2736 — read the hadith →

“Ali [may Allah be pleased with him] narrated: that a Mukatib came to him and said: “Indeed I am not capable of my Kitabah so aid me.” He said: “Should I not teach you words that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) taught me? If you had a debt upon you similar to the mountain of Sir, Allah would fulfill it…”

Calling Upon Allah by This Name

Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:

وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ فَٱدْعُوهُ بِهَا ۖ وَذَرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ يُلْحِدُونَ فِىٓ أَسْمَـٰٓئِهِۦ ۚ سَيُجْزَوْنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ

“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”

Surah Al-A’raf — 7:180Read in the Quran →

For this name, the Prophet (peace be upon him) left us a supplication for debt and need: ‘Allahumma-kfini bi-halalika ‘an haramik, wa-aghnini bi-fadlika ‘amman siwak — O Allah, suffice me with what You made lawful against what You made unlawful, and enrich me by Your grace so I need no one besides You’ (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3563). Use these words when bills, loans or a shrinking income press on you. Its lesson is double: keep your earning strictly lawful, and keep your hope fixed on the Enricher, not on the means.
