Al-Ghaffar
The Ever-Forgiving
What Al-Ghaffar Means
Al-Ghaffar is built on the root gh-f-r, to cover — the same root as the helmet that covers and protects a soldier’s head. The name is in the intensive form: the One who forgives again and again, every kind of sin, every time His servant returns. Allah defines the open door Himself: ‘I am Most Forgiving to whoever repents, believes, does righteous deeds and then remains guided’ (20:82). Nuh ﷺ preached it to a people who had rejected him for centuries: ‘Seek your Lord’s forgiveness; He has always been Ghaffar’ (71:10). And the promise is personal: ‘so long as you call upon Me and hope in Me, I forgive you… and I do not mind’ (Tirmidhi 3540). For a believer this name forbids despair. If the Prophet ﷺ — already forgiven — sought forgiveness a hundred times a day (Muslim 2702), then returning constantly to Al-Ghaffar is not a sign of failure; it is the way of the best of men.
Al-Ghaffar in the Quran
“So I said, ‘Pray to your Lord for your forgiveness,- Indeed He is Very-Forgiving, -“
“He created the heavens and the earth for just purpose. He wraps the night over the day and He wraps the day over the night, and He has put the sun and the moon under His command, each one of them moving for an appointed term. Remember, He is the Mighty, the Most-Forgiving.”
“Surely I am the Most-Forgiving for him who repents and believes and acts righteously, then follows the right path.”
What the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us
THE FOUNDATION OF THE 99 NAMES
“Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”
“Anas bin Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Allah, Blessed is He and Most High, said: ‘O son of Adam! Verily as long as you called upon Me and hoped in Me, I forgave you, despite whatever may have occurred from you, and I did not mind.”
“Al-Agharr al-Muzani, who was one amongst the Companions (of the Holy Prophet) reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: There is (at times) some sort of shade upon my heart, and I seek forgiveness from Allah a hundred times a day.”
Calling Upon Allah by This Name
Allah Himself commands us to call upon Him by His beautiful names:
“For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”
Allah commands us to call upon Him by His names (7:180), so you may call Him ‘Ya Ghaffar — O Ever-Forgiving’ in your own words, for example asking Him to forgive the sins you know and the ones you have forgotten. Keep two anchors from the evidence: the door stays open as long as you call and hope (Tirmidhi 3540), and istighfar is a daily habit, not an emergency measure — the Prophet ﷺ practised it a hundred times a day (Muslim 2702).
