Three-Narrator Ahadith 42
Book 3: Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal
Sufyān ibn ʻUyaynah narrated to us that ʻAmr ibn Dīnār heard Jābir ibn ʻAbdullāh say, “When the ‘Say: He has power to send punishment upon you from above you’ was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ said, ‘I seek refuge in Your Face.’ When the words ‘or from beneath your feet’ were revealed, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ said, ‘I seek refuge in Your Face.’ And when the words ‘or to confound you in factions and make you taste the violence of one another’ were revealed, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ said, ‘This is lighter,’ or perhaps he said, ‘This is easier.’”

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ عَمْرٍو، سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ: ﴾هُوَ الْقَادِرُ عَلَى أَنْ يَبْعَثَ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابًا مِنْ فَوْقِكُمْ﴿ [الأنعام: 65]، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «أَعُوذُ بِوَجْهِكَ»، فَلَمَّا نَزَلَتْ: ﴾أَوْ مِنْ تَحْتِ أَرْجُلِكُمْ﴿ [الأنعام: 65]، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «أَعُوذُ بِوَجْهِكَ»، فَلَمَّا نَزَلَتْ ﴾أَوْ يَلْبِسَكُمْ شِيَعًا وَيُذِيقَ بَعْضَكُمْ بَأْسَ بَعْضٍ﴿ [الأنعام: 65]، قَالَ: «هَذِهِ أَهْوَنُ أَو أَيْسَرُ»
