The Marriage to Sayyidah Khadijah (RA)

Perhaps he was a scholar of one of the previous heavenly scriptures, and he had recognized you ﷺ. Therefore, he said:

“You are right.”

After this, he met Maysarah privately and said:

“Maysarah! This man is a prophet. By the One in whose hand is my life, he is the very one whom our monks find mentioned in their books.”

Maysarah kept these words firmly in his mind.

Another incident occurred during the journey.

Two camels belonging to Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها had become extremely tired and were no longer able to walk. Because of them, Maysarah fell behind the caravan, while the Noble Prophet ﷺ was at the front of the caravan.

Maysarah became worried because of these two camels, so he ran toward the front and told you ﷺ about his difficulty.

You ﷺ came with him to the two camels, stroked their backs and hindquarters with your blessed hands, and recited something over them.

As soon as you ﷺ did this, the camels became well immediately. They then walked so quickly that they reached the front of the caravan. Now they were making sounds and showing enthusiasm while walking.

Then the people of the caravan sold their merchandise.

This time, they made such a large profit as they had never made before.

Therefore, Maysarah said to you ﷺ:

“O Muhammad! We have been doing business for Sayyidah Khadijah for many years, but we have never made such an extraordinary profit as we have made this time.”

Finally, the caravan set out on its return journey toward Makkah.

During this journey, Maysarah clearly observed that whenever it was hot and the Noble Prophet ﷺ was riding his camel, two angels would remain shading you ﷺ from the sunlight.

Because of all these things, love for you ﷺ settled deeply in Maysarah’s heart, and it seemed as though he had become your servant.

You ﷺ entered Makkah at midday. You had arrived before the rest of the caravan.

You ﷺ went directly to the house of Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها.

At that time, she was sitting with several women. They saw you ﷺ from a distance. You ﷺ were riding a camel, and two angels were shading you ﷺ.

Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها showed this scene to the other women as well. They were all greatly astonished.

Then you ﷺ told Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها about the details of the business journey and informed her about the profit.

This time, the profit was twice as much as before.

Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها was very happy.

She asked:

“Where is Maysarah?”

You ﷺ replied:

“He is still behind.”

Hearing this, Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها said:

“Please go to him immediately and bring him to me as soon as possible.”

You ﷺ set out again.

In reality, Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها had sent you ﷺ because she wanted to see the same scene once again. She wanted to know whether the angels were still shading you ﷺ or not.

As soon as you ﷺ departed, she climbed onto the roof of her house and began watching you ﷺ.

Your ﷺ appearance and condition still seemed exactly the same.

Now she became certain that her eyes had not deceived her.

After some time, you ﷺ arrived with Maysarah.

Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها said to Maysarah:

“I saw two angels shading him. Did you also see any such scene?”

Maysarah replied:

“I have been seeing this scene ever since the caravan departed from here for Syria.”

After this, Maysarah told her about his meeting with Nastura.

He also told her what the other man had said—the man who had asked you ﷺ to swear by Lat and Uzza.

Then he told her about the incident of the camels.

After hearing all these things, Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها gave you ﷺ twice the agreed-upon payment, even though the agreed-upon payment had already been twice as much as that given to other people.

All these things greatly astonished Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها.

She then met her cousin, Waraqah bin Nawfal. He was a scholar of the previous scriptures.

Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها told him everything she had personally seen and everything she had heard from Maysarah.

At that time, Waraqah bin Nawfal belonged to the Christian religion. Before that, he had been a Jew.

After hearing everything Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها had told him, Waraqah bin Nawfal said:

“Khadijah! If these things are true, then understand that Muhammad is the Prophet of this nation. I have already come to know that he is the future Prophet of this nation. The world was waiting for him. This is his time.”

Here, it should also be made clear that the Noble Prophet ﷺ did not make only one trade journey for Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها. He made several other journeys as well.

Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها was a noble and chaste woman. In terms of lineage as well, she was among the most distinguished people of Quraysh.

She was known as the Lady of Quraysh.

Many people from the community wished to marry her. Proposals from several young men had already reached her, but she had not accepted any of them.

When the Noble Prophet ﷺ returned from the trade journey, she had become greatly impressed by observing your ﷺ qualities and hearing your ﷺ words.

Therefore, she sent a woman named Nafisah bint Munyah to you ﷺ.

She came to you ﷺ and said:

“If a wealthy and chaste woman herself offered you a proposal of marriage, would you accept it?”

Hearing her words, you ﷺ said:

“Who is she?”

Nafisah immediately replied:

“Khadijah bint Khuwaylid.”

You ﷺ gave her permission to proceed.

Nafisah bint Munyah then came to Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها and told her everything.

Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها informed her uncle, Amr bin Asad, so that he could come and conduct the marriage.

Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها had been married twice before this.

Her first marriage was to Atiq ibn A’id. A daughter named Hindah was born from this marriage.

After Atiq passed away, Sayyidah Khadijah’s second marriage took place with a man named Abu Halah.

After Abu Halah passed away, Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها was living as a widow when she decided to marry you ﷺ.

At that time, Sayyidah Khadijah رضي الله عنها was approximately forty years old.

Sayyidah Khadijah’s uncle, Amr bin Asad, arrived there.

On the other side, the Noble Prophet ﷺ also arrived with his uncles.

There are different narrations regarding who conducted the marriage ceremony.

According to one narration, the marriage was conducted by the Prophet’s ﷺ uncle, Abu Talib.

There are also different narrations regarding the amount of Mahr (bridal gift).

According to one narration, the Mahr was approximately twelve uqiyyahs.

According to another narration, you ﷺ gave twenty young she-camels as Mahr.

After the marriage, the Noble Prophet ﷺ hosted a wedding feast, and at this feast you ﷺ slaughtered one or two camels.
