The Humiliating Defeat of the Disbelievers

Hazrat Bilal رضي الله عنه saw him and called out loudly:

“The leader of the disbelievers, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, is here! If Umayyah survives, then consider that I will not survive.”

Hazrat ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf رضي الله عنه had seen Umayyah and his son running about. Hazrat ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf رضي الله عنه had several pieces of armor in his hands. These were spoils of war that he had found on the battlefield.

However, as soon as he saw Umayyah and his son, he dropped the armor and seized both of them. Thus, the two of them became his prisoners.

He was taking them away when Hazrat Bilal رضي الله عنه saw them and began calling out:

“Here is Umayyah ibn Khalaf!”

As soon as Hazrat Bilal رضي الله عنه said these words, Hazrat ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf رضي الله عنه said:

“But these two are now my prisoners.”

Hazrat Bilal رضي الله عنه repeated the same words:

“If Umayyah survives today, then consider that I will not survive.”

At the same time, Hazrat Bilal رضي الله عنه called out to the people:

“O Ansar! O helpers of Allah! Here is Umayyah ibn Khalaf, the disbeliever. If he survives, then consider that I will not survive.”

Hearing this, the Ansar rushed toward them. They surrounded them from all sides.

Hazrat Bilal رضي الله عنه drew his sword and struck at him.

Hazrat ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf رضي الله عنه put Umayyah’s son in front of him in an attempt to save Umayyah.

Umayyah had been his friend during the days of ignorance. Because of that friendship, Hazrat ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf رضي الله عنه wanted to prevent him from being killed.

On the other hand, Hazrat Bilal رضي الله عنه was completely determined to see Umayyah killed.

Hazrat Bilal’s رضي الله عنه sword struck Umayyah’s son, and he fell wounded.

When Umayyah saw him fall, he let out a terrible cry.

The cry was extremely frightening and terrifying.

At the same time, swords were raised and Umayyah was killed.

While trying to save Umayyah, Hazrat ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf رضي الله عنه himself also suffered a minor injury.

He used to say:

“May Allah have mercy upon Bilal. Neither did I end up with the armor, nor did I get to keep the prisoners.”

At this point, the Noble Prophet ﷺ asked:

“Does anyone know what happened to Nawfal ibn Khuwaylid?”

In response, Hazrat ‘Ali رضي الله عنه said:

“O Messenger of Allah! I have killed him.”

Hearing this, the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Allah is the Greatest! All praise belongs to Allah, Who accepted my supplication regarding this man.”

Before the battle began, Nawfal ibn Khuwaylid had loudly declared:

“O Quraysh! Today is a day of honor and glory.”

Upon hearing this, the Prophet ﷺ had said:

“O Allah! Show me the fate of Nawfal ibn Khuwaylid.”

After this, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered:

“Search among the slain disbelievers for the body of Abu Jahl.”

Before the battle began, Abu Jahl had said:

“O Allah! Of the two religions (that is, Islam and the self-invented religion of the disbelievers), support and grant victory to whichever religion is more excellent and more beloved to You.”

Hazrat Mu‘adh ibn ‘Amr ibn al-Jamuh رضي الله عنه, who was counted among the younger Companions during this battle, says:

“During the battle, I saw that Abu Jahl was surrounded by many of his companions for his protection. They were saying:

‘O Abu al-Hakam!’”

(Abu al-Hakam was the kunya of Abu Jahl.)

“‘No one will be able to reach you.’

“When I heard them saying this, I advanced toward Abu Jahl and struck him with my sword.

“Because of this blow, he was severely wounded.

“Abu Jahl’s son, Hazrat ‘Ikrimah رضي الله عنه, came forward to help his father.

(Hazrat ‘Ikrimah رضي الله عنه accepted Islam at the time of the Conquest of Makkah.)

“He struck me with his sword. As a result, my arm was severely injured and remained attached only by a small amount of skin.

“I continued fighting, but because of my hanging arm, it became difficult to fight.

“I fought throughout the entire day while the arm remained hanging.

“Eventually, when it became too much of an obstruction, I placed my foot on it and pulled it away. It became detached, and I threw my arm aside.”

Abu Jahl was wounded when Mu‘awwidh ibn ‘Afra’ رضي الله عنه passed by him.

He struck Abu Jahl, causing him to fall.

Thinking that he was dead, Mu‘awwidh رضي الله عنه continued forward.

But Abu Jahl was still alive.

Hazrat Mu‘awwidh رضي الله عنه continued fighting and moved farther into the battlefield until he was martyred.

Meanwhile, Hazrat ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud رضي الله عنه passed by Abu Jahl, who was covered with wounds.

He placed his foot on Abu Jahl’s neck and said:

“O enemy of Allah! Has Allah not disgraced you?”

After this, Hazrat ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud رضي الله عنه killed Abu Jahl.

He then came to the service of the Noble Prophet ﷺ and said:

“O Messenger of Allah! I have killed Abu Jahl.”

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Greatness belongs only to that Being, the Exalted, besides Whom there is no deity.”

The Prophet ﷺ repeated these words three times.

Then the Prophet ﷺ gave Abu Jahl’s sword to Hazrat ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud رضي الله عنه.

This beautiful and valuable sword was decorated with silver work.

In the Battle of Badr, Allah Almighty also helped the Muslims through the angels.

On that day, Hazrat al-Zubayr ibn al-‘Awwam رضي الله عنه fought with extraordinary bravery. He suffered many serious wounds on his body.

During this battle, Hazrat ‘Ukashah ibn Mihsan رضي الله عنه’s sword broke while he was fighting.

The Noble Prophet ﷺ then gave him a date-palm stick.

As soon as that stick came into his hand, it miraculously transformed into a shining sword.

Hazrat ‘Ukashah رضي الله عنه continued fighting with that sword until Allah Almighty granted victory to the Muslims.

He named this sword ‘Awn.

This sword remained with Hazrat ‘Ukashah رضي الله عنه throughout all the battles, and he used to fight with it.

After his death, the sword continued to pass down through his descendants as an inheritance, going from one person to another.

Similarly, the sword of Hazrat Salamah ibn Aslam رضي الله عنه also broke.

The Noble Prophet ﷺ gave him a date-palm root and said:

“Fight with this.”

As soon as he took the root in his hand, it became an excellent sword.

It remained with him after this battle.

Hazrat Khubayb ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman رضي الله عنه narrates that a disbeliever struck his grandfather with a sword.

As a result of the blow, one of his ribs became displaced.

The Noble Prophet ﷺ applied his blessed saliva and placed the broken rib back into its position.

The rib settled back into its place as though it had never been broken.

Hazrat Rifa‘ah ibn Malik رضي الله عنه says:

“An arrow struck my eye and my eye was severely injured.

“I came to the service of the Noble Prophet ﷺ in that condition.

“The Prophet ﷺ applied his blessed saliva to my eye, and it became completely well immediately.

“Throughout the rest of my life, I never experienced any trouble in that eye.”

Then the Prophet ﷺ ordered that the bodies of the polytheists be brought from the places where he had indicated that they would be killed.

Hazrat ‘Umar رضي الله عنه says:

“Even one day before the battle, the Noble Prophet ﷺ had told us:

‘If Allah wills, tomorrow this will be the place where ‘Utbah ibn Rabi‘ah will be killed; this will be the place where Shaybah ibn Rabi‘ah will be killed; and this will be the place where Umayyah ibn Khalaf will be killed.’

“The Prophet ﷺ had pointed out these places with his blessed hand.”

Now, when the order was given to collect the bodies and the Companions رضي الله عنهم went out searching for them, the bodies of the disbelievers were found lying exactly at those same places.

The Noble Prophet ﷺ then ordered that all those bodies be placed into a pit.
