Encouraging and comforting the sick

The Prophet (SAW) taught that a person should say something reassuring when visiting the sick, as "it does not repel the divine decree, but it comforts the heart of the sick person."

Reference: Jami' al-Tirmidhi, graded Hasan, on the authority of Ibn Abbas (RA)

Explanation

Encouraging words are shown to have real emotional value for a patient, even though they cannot alter what Allah has decreed.
